When recently retired train operator Wladyslaw Orzechowski (Kazimierz Opalinski) is struck and killed by a train, railroad investigators interview those who worked with him to determine whether the death was accidental -- or perhaps murder. The investigators learn immediately that Orzechowski was disliked by both his younger coworkers, whom he bullied, and the management, whom he despised. But as the investigation continues, other surprising and unexpected sides of Orzechowski come to light.

Audience Member A great kind of alternate-noir with subtext criticising the politics and policies of the Stalin-era behind the iron curtain Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member May not be the best film ever shot, but it stands out due to two key qualities: the characters are awesomely drawn (and in rarely shown working conditions) and it is as anti-communist as a film shot in a Stalinian country can ever be. I really wonder how the director was not instantly shot. Unfortunately, there seems to be a key paradox in the film between the poetic aspirations of the director and the gritty realism of the film itself.
