In a small mining town in 1940s Nova Scotia, Margaret (Helena Bonham Carter) grows to despise the mines after her brother and dad die working there. She then meets Neil (Clive Russell), a bagpipe player who's just as put off by the hard work of rural living as she is. Though her mother disapproves, Margaret and Neil get married, and Neil promises to find work outside of the mines. This proves impossible, though, and Neil is forced to work with the rest of the town's men, with tragic results.

Steve D Melodramatic shlock on steroids. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member A sad but beautiful story. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm probably over-rating this because it's among the better Canadian movies I've seen... I wouldn't think it stacks up with other movies I've given four stars to, but I'm glad I gave it a chance. Compelling love story and a wonderful performance by Helena Bonham Carter. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member the ending is fucked up Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member this movie should be in my english class. We should read the book for this, it has a lot of realistic themes and human suffering. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member It tackles some very important subjects and themes, Russell & Bonham Carter do a great job together and the filml even carries a very witty (and sometimes dark) sense of humour. The problem is that despite opening on the ending the story lacks any sort of direction. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
