Brandon B 08/27/2023 I had a real hard time dealing with the language bouncing between English and Filipino. And the acting went from a little ok to abysmal throughout the entire movie. If you're as bored as I am after knee surgery, maybe watch this. It unfolds very nicely and keeps one attentive. See more @TKDLife 09/04/2021 There are many reasons not to like Maria. The dialogue is weak in many areas. Some of the acting is sketchy. Much of the fight choreography and fight cinematography is very weak. Yet I found myself enjoying it. I like the female empowerment theme that runs through it. I loved the integration of the Filipino culture and underworld. Ronnie Lazaro is terrific as the elder mob boss/mentor to the star, Cristina Reyes. Reyes, herself, is very good in the role of the cartel assassin drawn back into the cartel by her need for revenge.This one has promise. I would love to see a sequel. Shout out to Netflix for finding foreign action films to mix up the ordinary. This one is violent. This one is subtitled. See more 05/02/2021 MARIA 2019 is the first Filipino B-grade (or any grade) action movie I've ever seen. In no way does it makes a 5-star review but it's the first (I think) Filipino movie I've ever seen, so I'll give it a little boost for being my first. As a revenge action movie, it tells the story we all know - unless no one has ever seen a revenge action movie, then I digress. The choreography is solid but the filming could use some work. Some of the acting, especially with the lead and her wingman, are pretty good. The dialogue is - eh, nevermind. But the weapons and music are metal and the explosions are done just right to make a few scenes worth watching. If the Philippines want to throw their hats into the action arena, then let them.
