Michael E. Grost Classic Film and Television Crime melodrama benefits from the usual hard-hitting Warners approach, good cast, and a shrewd look at class and the collaboration of the educated and uneducated. Steve D Solid work by all involved. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/08/24 Full Review Aldo G Bette Davis is among a group of prostitutes (called "nightclub hostesses") ensnared in the grip of a mob kingpin/pimp. Provocative Warner Bros production with Humphrey Bogart playing a prosecutor. Some nice moments, including a great scene to end the film, but some of the performances missed the mark. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/04/23 Full Review David K Bette Davis AND Humphrey Bogart? Honestly, I love Bogie and dislike Davis, but... In this film, my normal take is not valid. Bogie is an afterthought, but not Davis. She rarely reaches into her bag of ham and the result is outstanding. The story, directed by Lloyd Bacon, is well-paced. One of Davis' better efforts. Of particular note, this was one of (if not the) first film Davis made after her "strike" against Warner Bros. for the roles she was getting. Good move. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/12/23 Full Review Audience Member It's pre-Bogie Bogart. He plays a crusading district attorney with complete conviction and perfect vocabulary and diction. Sam Spade he's not. But the film tells a dramatic, fast-paced story, and Davis is, as always, spellbinding. I'm also a big fan of Eduardo Ciannelli, despicable though he may be. Tune in. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review william d Maybe my rating is too harsh. After all, the film has Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart in it. However, the story is weak and the dialogue is incredibly lame. Even Lloyd Bacon's usually reliable direction seems off. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review deke p 1937 BETTE DAVIS was young, charming, cute and adorable. One might be 73 years old and almost never have had a chance to see her like this. And so were the other girls in this movie, And an excellent movie. AND BOGART as good District Atty. Saw it again, 3.7.2021 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
