The Martins family are optimistic dreamers, quietly leading their lives in the margins of a major Brazilian city following the disappointing inauguration of a far-right extremist president. A lower-middle-class Black family, they feel the strain of their new reality as the political dust settles. Tércia, the mother, reinterprets her world after an unexpected encounter leaves her wondering if she's cursed. Her husband, Wellington, puts all of his hopes into the soccer career of their son, Deivinho, who reluctantly follows his father's ambitions despite secretly aspiring to study astrophysics and colonize Mars. Meanwhile, their older daughter, Eunice, falls in love with a free-spirited young woman and ponders whether it's time to leave home.

Mars One nimbly centers each of its four main characters, elegantly weaving their stories into a poignant familial whole. All relatable, flawed, and charming in their own ways, they antagonize each other without anyone losing their humanity. Go to Full Review

By slowly introducing each of the four family members’ individual concerns in a mostly seamless manner, Martins immerses the viewer in his deftly written, multifaceted story of interpersonal growth. Go to Full Review

It’s the sincerity of the approach that keeps the film afloat at an early stage, but Mars One becomes more artificial, even melodramatic towards the end. Go to Full Review

It can be difficult to know what's going on as we watch these faces while we hear unexplained events going on around them. This is a good way of keeping a film's budget down, but not a good way of making things clear to the audience. Go to Full Review

dave d Jun 7 A Brazilian dramatic feature that should ring true to most middle class to working poor families anywhere in the world. It has a few gimmicks, that distract from how powerful this film is. This is a family that loves one another and is VERY strong. It is great to focus on a working family's struggle, but we need more of these film in the US. Well done Brazil! Final Score: 8.3/10 See more Rafael M Apr 22 Até os cinemas viraram um panfleto político. See more Daniel G 07/10/2024 Unsurprisingly it was a potential Brazilian nominee for Best Foreign Film at the Oscars 2023. Very realistic dialogues and acting, tender story and perfect watching during Easter, as it was a bit of the story of a rebirth of a family and its members. As the focus was really on their lives, one must discount the somewhat shallow treatment of the other characters or details of how the daughter actually was able to make money to afford her life and her gifts to her brother.
