Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News Tsang’s perceptive first feature has a big heart but doesn’t cave to simplistic sentimentality. It delivers a welcome story about two emotionally wounded characters helping each other to learn to deal with grief. Rated: 3/4 Apr 28, 2022 Full Review Katie Rife RogerEbert.com Marvelous and the Black Hole has enough warmth to overcome its practical limitations. Rated: 3/4 Apr 22, 2022 Full Review Sarah-Tai Black Los Angeles Times While par for the course in terms of its premise as well as much of its plotting, “Marvelous and the Black Hole” is still somewhat refreshing in its visual style and experimentation. Apr 22, 2022 Full Review Amy Smith InSession Film With a few tweaks, there is a strong movie in here. I just wish that some of the writing didn’t feel as flat and that there was a strong demographic group for the film. Gail O Refreshing & well done! Rhea casts a spell…great journey. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/28/24 Full Review Serena P I thought the movie was well portrayed and the actors gave a realistic and emotional view into this vignette of an Asian-American family. Miya Cech is dealing with the loss of her mother, the grief of this loss and the anger at her father for moving on too soon according to her. I was impressed by the style of the animation that seemed a perfect fit to convey the grief, anger and loss of a teenage girl. I liked that they used the legends and stories from the culture & loved of the tale of the Emperess and the Rabbit. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Rating: A- "Marvelous and the Black Hole is a massive surprise, being one of my absolute favorites from Sundance so far. Kate Tsang's feature directorial debut is a huge success that definitely places her as a filmmaker to pay close attention to in the following years. With a remarkably subtle, detailed screenplay, Miya Cech and Rhea Perlman spread their sparkling chemistry across the screen, delivering two of the most entertaining performances I've seen in the last few days. A heartwarming story that begins with the impact of the loss of a mother and finishes with an emotionally powerful, uplifting, magic(al) show that I'll remember for quite a while. The young protagonist is so relatable that I couldn't help but drop a couple of tears by the end." Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Heartwarming and hilarious. Rhea Perlman looks like she's having a blast and Miya Cech is going to be a star. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Heartbreaking and heartwarming. Familiar yet brand new. So many things make this movie worthwhile and enjoyable. The story moves at a great pace. The writing is clever, and fits the characters perfectly. The acting is fantastic. The visuals are fresh and engaging. This movie will warm your heart, and make you believe in magic. A+ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member I can literally write the same review for the vast majority of new films coming out because they all have the underlying problem which is a meritless purpose. Diversity cast and crew, which means the story, cast, crew are hired based on superficial characteristics, not talent which leads to unoriginal, soulless, meritless, overly formulated structure and empty predictable experience. This was no exception. In general there is nothing wrong with diverse cast if they are picked because of a story that warrants it, but not fi they are picked due to a quota requirement. I don't think I believed one second of this film from the writing to the directing. The characters were caricatures instead of real life people I could believe. I didn't believe anything that happened or was said. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews
