Critics Consensus

Jason Statham and Ben Foster turn in enjoyable performances, but this superficial remake betrays them with mind-numbing violence and action thriller cliches.

Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express The Mechanic gets a low score even by the abysmal standards set by Statham and the kinds of films he assembly-lines. Rated: 1.5/5 Apr 3, 2019 Full Review Leah Rozen TheWrap Statham, he of the chiseled physique and sexily receding hairline, holds his own here, doing what he has to in scenes and no more -- which is perfect for a movie like this. Oct 7, 2011 Full Review Una LaMarche Observer The Mechanic is like a Beretta loaded with blanks -- quick and brutal but ultimately empty. Rated: 2/4 Apr 4, 2011 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review With director Simon West’s remake, it becomes apparent that apathy no longer makes for an admirable protagonist or even a dynamic one. Rated: 1.5/4 Aug 3, 2023 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Tends to be more perceptive than active, extracting the most it can from the original. [Full review in Spanish] Oct 7, 2022 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Underneath its grittier, hyper-violent, modernistic shaky-cam exterior, it's still a Jason Statham movie - for better or for worse. acsdoug D It's been a while since I saw the original Charles Bronson version, but I think I liked that one better than this one. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Michael S Dumb, predicable, and joyless. Considering Statham's hitman prides himself on making his hits look like accidents, there's an awful lot of messy shootouts in the final third of the movie. Just sayin... Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/07/24 Full Review Shani shaa S Jason Statham is wonderful actor..👍 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/14/24 Full Review Jessica H I absolutely love just about every movie jason plays in he is a great actor Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/13/24 Full Review William R they didnt stingy on the budget, lots of action from start to end, good surprise Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/10/24 Full Review Nathan W I haven't watched the 1972 Mechanic in many years, so I can't really speak to its quality as a remake. As a standalone project, its basically another generic, if slightly above average, Jason Statham movie. The motives and plot didn't always make sense. The characters had minimal dialogue and the writing was nothing special. There was a decent amount of action though, but most of it took place at the tail end of the film. If the whole movie was like the third act, which was great, this would have easily been in four star contention. But for most of the film, the plot was slow, uninteresting, and had too much filler. The cinematography and score were both pretty good, but it was just a mask to cover a mostly lazy plot. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/20/24 Full Review Read all reviews
