Lynzee Loveridge Anime News Network Magnetic Rose is a masterclass in sci-fi that isn't bogged down in justification for its own existence. It's an effectively creepy ghost story set in a fully-realized sci-fi setting backed by creators at the top of their game. Rated: A Jul 19, 2023 Full Review Tim Brayton Antagony & Ecstasy Like any anthology, it can't help but feel misshapen, but even its weakest moments are still awfully successful and worthwhile. Rated: 8/10 Apr 27, 2015 Full Review Beth Accomando KPBS.org A trilogy of anime aimed more at adults than kids. From slow and thoughtful to hilarious to pointedly satiric. Anime at its best. Alexander B The animation is amazing and so is the stories featured in the film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review glen a You get 3 non-related episodes in "Memories", but they are not of equal quality. This movie deserves an A just for the first segment alone. It is a marvelous piece of animation that tells a wonderfully imaginative story. The second segment is beautifully animated, but I just didn't care for the story. The third segment does a nice job of world building, but there really isn't a story. Watch the first segment, but turn it off after that, unless you have time to kill. I give it an A, make a point to go see this movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Didn't expect for this to be so excellent and innovative! If you want quality mind-fuck storytelling, I would highly recommend checking out this anthology! The first story gave me strong Stanislaw-Lem vibes, or any other Soviet sci-fi for that matter. I loved how the story took a creative take on sirens - except its futuristic tale in space. The second story also was just bonkers good - the irony of it all, an asymptomatic carrier of a disease being completely ignorant of his condition ends up killing thousands of people - that hit too close to home in 2020. The third story felt like 1984 retelling from the POV of a family, and I both loved it and was terrified by it! The animation style was spooky yet the most fitting for that type of story. Overall, I can't wait to check out more stuff from Katsuhiro Otomo - this movie was insane and incredible in its insanity! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review andres s Wow! The music, the art, the animations, the feel of it all is entrancing. I think it's amazing how Japan is so good at creating things that are futuristic. I mean, I think they understand the future better than anyone. This S.O.S. mission is going to turn out to be some kind of trap, something doesn't feel right. It feels like people are going to start dying. This has Dead Space vibes written all over it. Impressive how elegant this whole movie is. Really creepy when they get on the ship and they start seeing shit. The imagery in this movie is mesmerizing. Those white gloves clapping in the audience without any body connected to them, was so surreal. So fucking creepy how Heinz had the flashback to when he was at the dinner table with his family and then when he wakes up from the flashback, his wife has changed into Eva and looks like a mannequin type statue made of glue and she's grinning at him. Wow, the way the A.I. tried fucking with him by replaying the way his daughter died but this time right in front of him. I'm glad he was able to be strong and look past the A.I.'s bullshit. Memories can either heal us or cause pain again. Don't let your memories devour you and keep you from living your life in the present. Love can heal but it can also destroy. Holy shit! That first short was so fucking good!! Beautiful, poetic. Japanese Ska! That's a first for me. Oh my god! All those helicopters and fighter jets in the air when he lol. That was overkill. Ok, I just realized episode 2 is a satire for the ridiculous overuse of military. It also satires viruses and how instead of one person having an immunity and antibodies to it, he instead spreads it lol. Kind of like a fart. It's so funny how they're using everything the military has to bring him down and he's just on a Vespa barely getting touched by the missiles. This episode 3 has a super interesting aesthetic and the art and animations differ from the other two episodes. Now I see why it's called City of Cannons. Wow, what a fucked up concept. The place where you live revolves around shooting cannons. What a fucked up dystopian world. Jesus, that whole loading of the red cannon scene was intense. The music definitely contributed to the intensity of it all. So much detail as well. That's so funny and typical; the lower men are the ones that prepare the weapons and everything and then the higher rank person is the one that calls the shot or in this case, fires the cannon. What are they firing at? Who are they firing at?! If it weren't for the magical sounding music, this episode would feel a lot darker. Amazing how much music can affect the scene in a movie. The Orwellian inspiration i all throughout this episode. Wow, so much to take in. They brainwash from the beginning when they're children, making them think that what they're fighting for is for the good of their nation when all along they don't even know what they're fighting against. This is brilliant social commentary in regards to how we start wars for no reason and we don't know the reasons for what or why we are fighting for. Incredible, stunning, visually dazzling. Memories is a must own. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member The Magnetic Rose segment is as fabulously atmospheric as it is spectacularly visual. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member really good movie, i really love "magnetic rose" and "cannon folder", but "stink bomb" has certainly good animations but is really under the two other parts Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews
