      Critics Consensus

Men & Chicken's bizarre setup only skims the surface of a challenging, well-acted comedy with a warm heart to match its grotesque visuals and dark themes.

Ed Potton Times (UK) Anders Thomas Jensen is one of Denmark's most fêted film-makers, the winner of two Oscars and a man with a knack for twisted comedies. Rated: 3/5 Oct 10, 2016 Full Review Leslie Felperin Radio Times Like the mansion where most of the action unfolds, writer/director Anders Thomas Jensen's fourth feature brims with mutant creatures, bestial desires and warped family feelings. Rated: 3/5 Jul 17, 2016 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) A darkly comic dysfunctional family drama rather than the carnival of grotesquery it could have been. Rated: 4/5 Jul 17, 2016 Full Review Akos Peterbencze Vulnerable Man (Medium) Men and Chicken is just as much of a horror as it is a comedy and a family drama. It’s the most disturbing yet hilarious movie I’ve seen for a long time. Jul 21, 2023 Full Review C.J. Prince Way Too Indie Jensen and his game cast (especially Mikkelsen, who's hard to recognize at points) make it work too, and turn Men & Chicken into a film that's just as strange as it is entertaining. May 25, 2019 Full Review Nick Evan-Cook One Room With A View Somewhat front-heavy, the twisted and demented Men and Chicken starts as a broad screwball comedy yet ends as a sobering and existential study of fraternity. R 9 'Men & Chicken' is... out there. Good film, though! The only criticism I have is the run time, I reckon they could've shaved a decent chunk off so the somewhat predictable conclusion comes around quicker. That aside, I enjoyed this 2015 release. It has a strong cast, good humour (mainly across the first half or so) and has a plot that is certainly intriguing - and even manages a positive message in the end, just about. Mads Mikkelsen is good value here, as he is in pretty much all of his films let's be honest. I watched this as part of my watch through his filmography, so it was cool to see a number of familiar faces that he worked with previously; as well as director Anders Thomas Jensen, of course. Nikolaj Lie Kaas the most obvious, to me anyway, example of that, though you also have the likes of David Dencik and Nicolas Bro. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/18/23 Full Review Flixster F 5.5/10. It's unique but not entertaining enough. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/10/23 Full Review Rose G Love a movie that forces you to think about its deeper themes and what it's really saying Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Wolfgang G Men & Chicken ist eine dänische schwarze Komödie, von Anders Thomas Jensen (Drehbuch und Regie). Ein hintersinniger Boshafter Humor mir ausschlaggebende Figuren. Eine köstliche Satire mit grotesken Dialogen und abstrusen Bildern. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/03/22 Full Review william r Absolutely incredible. Everyone here puts on a hell of a performance in one of the most distinct fever dreams I've ever had the pleasure of seeing.
