Critics Consensus

Michael Keaton's directorial debut, The Merry Gentleman, is a slow character study aided greatly by the performances of Keaton and Kelly MacDonald.

The film never quite convinces as anything other than a puff-piece for Keaton, but it is bolstered by another deeply empathetic turn from Macdonald. Go to Full Review

Ted O Oct 20 Tedious. Atrocius, mostly unbelievable plot. Bad dialogue. Stuck it out. So the writer(s?) don't care for cops, but they're still human, or so the movie implied. The ending was???????? Don't waste your time as i have done. See more Mark S Aug 5 I found Kelly Macdonald so utterly annoying as well as being unbelievable. Who could have thought she would be convincing? Whatever Keaton was going for, it didn't come off. See more nick s Mar 3 Well filmed on a technical level. The acting was good too. But I didn't find the plot particularly engaging. It was more of a character study than a carefully crafted story. See more June C Dec 31 I enjoyed this slow moving movie. Great acting from all involved. Definitely worth a watch which proves Rotten Tomatoes isn't ALWAYS accurate. See more Priscilla C Dec 29 gentle film about a battered wife, her abusive husband, a kind hitman, and a fat divorced alcoholic detective who inserts himself in their lives...lovely soundtrack...keaton's directorial debut...i'm impressed See more Darren B 11/22/2024 I don't usually notice bad writing in a movie but the dialogue often makes no sense, logical flaws in the movie, and lots of bad hammy acting. Id have given it only half a star but it's so bad at times it made me laugh out loud so it gets a higher rating See more Read all reviews
