      Millie Lies Low

Released Jun 30, 2023 1 hr. 40 min. Comedy Drama List
86% 21 Reviews Tomatometer Millie, an architecture student from Wellington, New Zealand, has landed a competitive internship with a prestigious firm in New York. After telling everyone she knows about the opportunity, she suddenly suffers a panic attack as her plane is about to take off, and misses her flight. In a desperate pivot, Millie decides to save face by hiding in plain sight around Wellington, suitcase in tow, using Instagram and the power of denial to depict a trip to New York City that never happened. Trapped in a spiral of hilariously uncomfortable self-inflected scenarios, Millie will have to dig deep to restore her mental health and her dignity. Praised for capturing "the chaotic self-destruction of Fleabag and the anxious missteps of Eighth Grade," (FilmDaze), Millie Lies Low is a poignant cringe comedy for our time. Maryam Z Had high hopes, but Millie's spiral into madness and her fantasy world left me feeling very uncomfortable. Overall a very sickening portrayal of the modern social-media obsessed world-view. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/10/24 Full Review B G This is a refreshingly unique film that I really enjoyed. Although Scotney is young, she displayed a sophisticated depth, maturity and complexity to Millie's character. I feel that there is a message of redeption in the film: That being honest and vulnerable will release you from the misery and loneliness of bullshit. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Ana Scotney's work. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/01/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Ben Kenigsberg New York Times In the end, the movie far too easily waves away the potential interpersonal damage Millie has caused. Jun 29, 2023 Full Review Alexandra Heller-Nicholas AWFJ.org An enjoyable although not necessarily deeply probing film, Millie Lies Low is a charming but perhaps not exactly memorable way to kill an hour and a half or so. Aug 18, 2022 Full Review Phil Hoad Guardian A shrewd and promising debut. Rated: 4/5 Aug 16, 2022 Full Review Tim Brennan About Boulder Scenes run slightly too long, but too long in the right way. We watch Millie spinning a half truth, then a whole untruth, and by the time she’s gotten to a double untruth, we wonder if the person she’s dealing with believes her. Jul 17, 2023 Full Review Morris Yang In Review Online On the whole, Savill’s character study succeeds in evoking the dreadful loneliness of deceit without resorting to cheap schadenfreude. Jul 3, 2023 Full Review Alan Ng Film Threat This little drama serves as the perfect alternative to the big studio dreck... Rated: 7.5/10 Jun 30, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews
