Twelve years after Margarito's (Frank Ramierez) daughter, Evelia (Amalia Duque Garcia), died at the age of 7, he digs her up when his Colombian village's cemetery is sold to a developer that offers to relocate the dead in a new lot. When he discovers that Evelia's body is perfectly preserved, Margarito wants her recognized as a saint, but is discouraged by local church authorities. Determined to have her canonized, he goes to the Vatican with the body to get their attention directly.
