Critics Consensus

Miss Julie definitely gives Jessica Chastain and Colin Farrell room to shine, but neglects to leave them a solid enough setting to augment their efforts.

Tara Brady Irish Times Chastain is as brittle and fragile a Miss Julie as ever there was. Rated: 3/5 Mar 2, 2016 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) Liv Ullmann's adaptation of August Strindberg's play might best be billed as a midsummer night's sex tragedy. It is on the overwrought side. Rated: 3/5 Sep 4, 2015 Full Review Sophie Monks Kaufman Little White Lies All talents are ill-served by the unambitious handling of the material. Rated: 2/5 Sep 3, 2015 Full Review Marya E. Gates Cool People Have Feelings, Too. (Substack) Gets dark and weird as it explores thorny themes of class and power. Feb 13, 2024 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand It is claustrophobic by design, which becomes oppressive and at times airless. It’s fascinating to watch, though not necessarily enjoyable ... Sep 8, 2023 Full Review Allen Almachar The MacGuffin There are many things worth commending, one of which is the strength of the performances. But as I step back and think about it as an overall piece, I find myself overwhelmingly ... unaffected. Rated: B- Jul 17, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Megan e ugh, this movie just was not for me! Performances are solid, but I swear every character is crazy with this thin veneer of civility. Not recommended! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/10/23 Full Review Rachelw Colin Farrell and Jessica Chastain are great but this was a complete waste of 2 hours. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/01/23 Full Review steve d Jessica Chastain is perhaps award worthy, but the film is pure melodrama. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review steve r I'm so glad I ignored the low audience rating of this film and went with the critic score and my experience with the cast. Clearly, it's not everyone's cup of tea (or beer or wine). For one thing, it's a play. Moreover, it's all about the characters, their relationships, and how they cope with loneliness, fear, ambition, lust, and a host of circumstances beyond their control. It's a good story and the acting is superb. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member This has to be one of the worst movies ever made. Take an excellent actress and good actor, miscast them horribly, add an absurd script, basically shoot the movie in a kitchen, and what do you get? Incredibly ridiculous scenes that drone on ridiculously, a plot that is plotless, and a movie that looks like it was made on scant shoestring. Jessica Chastain is woefully lost in the role of a seductress; Colin Firth is completely adrift alternately ranting about the difference between classes and kissing Chastain's shoes; and poor Samantha Morton's portrayal of Kathleen is, well, sadly lacking. In sum, we were just angry with ourselves that we wasted 70 minutes watching this before fast forwarding to the end. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
