Cameron H I loved the now dated, but retro animation style. The world building and action sequences were fantastic. I like how the film isn’t just about war, but how characters live and survive during a violent conflict. The characters were interesting and it was cool to see the character of Amuro develop from being a nobody, to becoming a good hero character. Even though anime isn’t my go-to form of entertainment, I still want to check out the rest of the films in this series to see where the story goes. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/23/25 Full Review Tony K A good starting point for the franchise. Compilation of the original series. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/02/23 Full Review Audience Member A "compilation movie" of the first thirteen episodes of the anime, Mobile Suit Gundam I excels in galaxy-building and Mecha fighting, which is what I signed up for. Humanity has far exceeded the saturation point for the global population, so colonies float in space orbit with their own societies, but loyal to the Earth Federation. However, a breakaway faction, the Principality of Zeon, has waged war against the Federation to secure its independence. When we arrive, the war has largely come to a stalemate with half of humanity dead — seems like they solved the overpopulation issue. While several characters are introduced, our main protag is Amuro (Brad Swaile), a teenager who, out of necessity, pilots the RX-78–2 Gundam to protect his home colony — the rest is history. While there certainly isn't a dearth of action, the over two hours and fifteen minutes becomes a drag. It definitely made me want to continue with the movies, but I'm not sure I could do the next one, if it's of similar length, in one sitting. The Gundam universe is iconic and my kind of Sci-Fi.
