For those who can land on its wavelength, it's an attractive and offbeat picture, almost as interested in its Los Angeles setting as in its central characters. Go to Full Review

This is a movie you can dream into, even as nightmare glimpses of American sexual repression and capitalist culture of greed and war come and go. Go to Full Review

Model Shop doesn't look like the failure of an accomplished film-maker, but like the work of a hippie-come-lately hack. Go to Full Review

Wayne K Jun 27 Quentin Tarantino is well known for including homages to films he like in his own projects, and Model Shop is one of the many films he ‘homaged’ when he made Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. The film is a one-man odyssey, with a despondent everyman cruising around tinsel town, a place where dreams are made, trying desperately to scrape together enough money to keep his car and facing many of life’s difficult and awkward challenges along the way. The adventure he goes on is like a microcosm of human suffering ang longing, whether its searching for a love that can never be, trying to escape impending mortal danger that’s reframed as a moral and patriotic duty, losing a person you care about because your lives are going in different directions, and even trying to accumulate the funds to save something you value but being unable to avoid the many temptations that come with big city living. It’s the kind of film everyone will enjoy, and I suspect many will be put of buy it’s seemingly repetitive nature and lack of a grand narrative, but it’s a film made to capture a moment in time, the precipice of arguably the most culturally significant decade of the 20th century. And in that regard, it does it beautifully. See more Steven M 11/22/2024 It’s okay to watch, but a bit boring. The music in the film is very cool, done by the legendary Spirit. A number of the band are in the film in different places. See more F R 10/29/2023 This film was made in 1969. The Vietnam War hangs over the protagonist's head. George (Gary Lockwood) is alienated from everything. He lives in an oil field. His girlfriend broken up with him. He cannot pay his car note. No one will lend him money. He got drafted. George followed a girl to the "Model Shop", where he falls in love with Cecile (Anouk Aimee). He does not know the person, yet he loves her. Yawn ! This creep talks about mortality. He talks about love. Yet he is self absorbed and he pouts. The film ends with George telling Cecile's roommate, Barbara over the phone that he wants to start again. Even the supposed renaissance offered to him by Cecilia is cheap and meaningless. See more Chun P 07/18/2023 An exploration of existential angst in LA during the mid-1960s. Reminiscent of Antonioni's interest in middle-class ennui. Which were addressed in his trilogies.
