Audience Member AKA Le Monocle Rit Jaune/The Monocle's Sour Laugh, a highly recommended series debut. Steele fans may be disappointed, as Meurisse was apparently disrespectful towards the actress's genre background. This seems highly evident in their bizarrely hostile scenes of mock romance, which nonetheless kind of work in the context of the film. The Hong Kong period locations are simply spectacular, and used as a means to comment on French post-colonial backlash and nuclear terror quite cleverly in Lautner's well-scripted dialogue. This takes place in many great scenes that go beyond the usual fish/water antics. For example, having Le Monocle discourse philosophically with a like-minded opium den patron while engaging in the substance. This leads into one of many hilarious fight scenes, all of which vary in tone and comic timing, with many instances of ridiculous overkill and abstractly casual gunplay. The arch-villain is played expertly by Kwan Ching Liang, amusingly spouting Maoist dogma. He may have even choreographed a key slow-motion fight sequence which lovingly satirizes Kung Fu conventions in contrast to Meurisse and his compatriots' drugged, linear opposition.
