What to Know

Critics Consensus

A cult classic as gut-bustingly hilarious as it is blithely ridiculous, Monty Python and the Holy Grail has lost none of its exceedingly silly charm.

Alexander Walker London Evening Standard It is quite the brightest home-grown comedy in ages. Apr 1, 2025 Full Review Colin Bennett The Age (Australia) There are uninspired lapses... and there are rich and hilarious moments of the absurd. A review cannot help turning into a catalogue of the hits rather than the misses. Apr 1, 2025 Full Review Patrick Gibbs Daily Telegraph (UK) Historical burlesque is really far too obvious and too familiar for the usually unpredictable Monty Python team of writers and actors, and they get terribly bogged down in Arthurian England, circa AD 932. Apr 1, 2025 Full Review Penelope Houston Observer (UK) The effortfully inane action, verbal tomfoolery and in-house TV jokes dangle limply from the cinema screen, waiting for a breeze which the directors, Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones, never manage to whistle up. Apr 1, 2025 Full Review Tom Hutchinson Liverpool Echo Much more disciplined than their first film and, therefore, more effective in gags which, however brutal, still manage to smartly crack the funnybone. Apr 1, 2025 Full Review Dorothy Smiljanich Tampa Bay Times The search for the Holy Grail has never been so outrageously funny, so full of mocking satire and absurd thought associations that trigger a string of wildly unrelated fantasies. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/27/25 Full Review Audience Member Basically a perfect movie. The most funny random movie I've ever seen. Just hilarious. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/24/25 Full Review Emma F King Arthur’s quest for the Holy Grail, accompanied by a quirky group of knights, is filled with humor and absurdity. Their journey takes them through various challenges, including encounters with murderous rabbits and political dissidents. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review Lyrical S Entirely messy and self aware, this film is a work of art that still stands up to its reputation today. Its witty parallels and nonsensical plotlines continue to resonate with audiences, and it's various visual techniques keep the viewer stimulated. A lot of work went into the final product, and it shows, yet it also manages to portray a certain degree of effortlessness. Monty Python has cemented itself into the history of absurdist comedy films. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/01/25 Full Review Kayce D I have loved this movie ever since I was a child, and it never gets old. It's a cinematic masterpiece.
