      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Its deliberate pacing is certainly an acquired taste, but Moon Man's enchanting animation style and subversive flourishes make it a refreshingly off-beat yarn.

Kate Muir Times (UK) This has the curious semi-adult tone of many European animations and the story moves too slowly for childish appetites. May 1, 2020 Full Review Alissa Simon Variety Stephan Schesch's feature debut remains true to Ungerer's drawings, but the narrative has been expanded a tad beyond the patience of wee ones, and lacks enough satirical bite to make it a cult film for adults. May 1, 2020 Full Review Rob Nelson Minneapolis Star Tribune This hand-drawn German-Irish-French co-production is a calm, kindhearted, visually inventive ode to friendship - and the ideal alternative to the latest batch of abrasive big-screen cartoons. May 1, 2020 Full Review Jeremy Aspinall Radio Times Sentimental it is not, just charming and quaintly unassuming. Rated: 3/5 May 1, 2020 Full Review Joe Bendel Epoch Times "Moon Man" has a healthy supply of idealism with the right subversive garnish. [Stephan] Schesch keeps the mood light and airy, even when the chips are down, maintaining a pleasant medium-up-tempo pace. Rated: 3.5/5 May 1, 2020 Full Review Abigail Chandler SciFiNow Moon Man gleefully disobeys all rules of Hollywood storytelling, with whole chunks of time going by without the story being progressed in any sort of meaningful way. Richard K An enjoyable science fiction/comedy that displays the continued growth of Chinese cinematography. It displays a sense of humor like Blazing Saddles with a similar level of insanity. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/15/22 Full Review Audience Member Der Mondmann (2012) (international title: Moon Man) is based on the traditional children's story of the Moon Man visiting Earth and his misadventures to travel back to the moon. Although the movie is mainly targeted at a younger audience, more mature viewers will notice the many references in the movie and how it sensibly deals with topics like friendship, trust, and commitment. Production-wise the movie is made very competently with beautiful backgrounds, vibrant colors, and sharp contrasts. However, sometimes the pacing feels off and the movie features few elements that seem out of place in a typical children's movie (e.g., the romantic scene). Thus, the movie is generally entertaining, highly imaginative, and beautiful to look at – but could also use a slightly better focus. My son and I loved this movie, He wants to watch it again. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Yes..........It's for children and those who can understand this complex story of the world. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/11/23 Full Review ken k What a wonderful gift to a troubled world. From the unbridled mind of Tomi Ungerer....the equivalence of a gentle hug. Great for the child in all of us and a guide to a kinder more gentle world. Not to mention the amazing music and animation that shows the lack of heart in today's CG crazy cinema. Walt would be proud! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/31/14 Full Review Audience Member Delightful animated story in which the Moon Man hitches a lift to Earth. An evil dictator plots to conquer the moon by enlisting the help of an ingenious old inventor. Beautiful artwork and a wonderful storyline create a magical tale brought to life for the cinema.
