Jay Weissberg Variety While Mother also deals with unsavory elements, it does so with a quirky, "Fargo"-like humor that's a pleasure to watch. Audience Member (Int. Therapist's Office) Urainia: It shocked me when my husband saw my mother's work and said he had no idea she was an artist after we'd been married for years. Apasmara: (as Therapist) You didn't tell your husband your mother was an artist? Urainia: I had no idea she was an artist until my husband told me that. My father and sister relentlessly mocked my mother for her art. I saw her art as something my whole family perceived as her being obsessively foolish to do. Apasmara: You didn't think she was foolish? Urainia: I took her side because my father and sister are brutal when they start teasing you. And they will put hard insults in soft jokes because my father taught my sister how to use her insecurities in this fashion. Apasmara: How did this make you feel about your mother? Urainia: I hated defending her. It made me feel humorless. But, the other option to tease her about what she was passionate about didn't feel right. I decided being humorless with my mother was okay. Apasmara: Do you accept that your mother is an artist now? Urainia: Of course I do. But, I feel for my dad. He's not a horrible guy. Apasmara: You didn't say he was horrible. Urainia: I insinuated it, but, my dad takes care of my mom. He cleans the house, he cooks most of the meals, when she has surgeries he waits on her hand and foot...It just makes me think... Apasmara: What? Urainia: Maybe that's why he's been bringing down her art all these years. He's sick of taking care of the house while she's completely absorbed in her craft, so he just tears down her art a bunch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
