Audience Member In the light of the Supreme Court granting bail to Binayak Sen, who had been arrested for possession of Naxal literature, I would recommend everyone who can appreciate a well made movie to watch 'Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa'. A hard hitting drama about the Naxal movement in West Bengal in the 1970s and how a young man gets drawn towards it. Power house performance by Jaya Bachchan as the pain stricken but resolute mother, Sujata Chatterjee. Joy Sengupta puts in a commendable act of the angst driven, ideologically articulate but dynamic youth, Brati Chatterjee. Definitely one of those special movies for me, which I couldn't take my eyes off. Must watch. And do try and appreciate every little thing this movie has to offer. 4/5. Story is a journey of a mother who has so many Farz (as a mother, as a wife, as a woman) who goes back to the friends of her son?s or just people who knew him to get to know him after his death. Meanwhile, other family members like Anupam Kher and his sisters, were ashamed for the fact that Brati was associated with the controversial group. Clearly, movie is made very well, very artistic theatrical kind of movie. So I found the movie very slow, but it was made and directed well. Performances by all, be it Jaya Bachchan ,Anupam Kher , Joy Sengupta , Nandita Das, Seema Biswas were excellent.
