Dennis Harvey Variety [T]his typically high-polish, psychologically angled Spanish horror-thriller is well handled in all departments even if its ideas never feel particularly fresh, or their execution more than solid. Aug 19, 2020 Full Review Jonathan Holland The Hollywood Reporter Enjoyable if unsubtle historical horror featuring a deliciously over-the-top central performance by Macarena Gomez. Aug 19, 2020 Full Review Anton Bitel Sight & Sound Elegant yet utterly over the top, this shrill film requires a high tolerance for melodrama - yet while it barely hides its narrative secrets, it does conceal allegory of an adolescent Spain struggling to break free from the sins of the father. Nov 4, 2014 Full Review Jordi Costa El Pais (Spain) An energetic debut. [Full Review in Spanish] Aug 19, 2020 Full Review En Filme Staff En Filme A refined and intimate film. Sarfaraz A The Spanish thriller was directed by Juanfer Andres and Esteban Roel. The cast includes Luis Tosar, Macarena Gomez, Nadia de Santiago, and Hugo Silva. Gomez won Best Actress at the Goya Awards for her performance in the film. The narrative is set in the 1950s in Madrid, where an older sister, Gomez, has restricted herself to an apartment with her younger sister. Gomez is religious, reciting Christian prayers and displaying religious paintings and symbols on walls, tables, and so forth. She allows her younger sister Nadia, who is turning 18, to go outdoors, but she does not dare to go outside. Gomez also experiences a vision of her father reprimanding her if she fails to meet her commitments. One day, a stranger living upstairs knocks on her door for aid; his leg is wounded. Gomez is first hesitant, but eventually invites him in and secretly cares for him. She lies to him, saying she phoned a doctor and had him examined while he was unconscious. Things begin to unravel as Gomez refuses to let him leave; his leg is deteriorating by the day, and Nadia, having discovered this, advises the man to flee for his life. The film reminded me of Misery (1990), starring James Caan and Kathy Bates. The whole film is shot within the apartment complex. Gomez delivered an exciting performance. I figured out the suspense around halfway through. Some situations may have been more modified; how can she take down two adult women with knitting needles? The younger sister feels sorry for the injured guy and can thrash her older sister, but she is helpless to notify the police or anybody else about what is going on at home. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/25/25 Full Review Hugo S Spain, 1950s. Struggling with agoraphobia, a woman lives secluded in her apartment. As a result of an abusive past at the hands of her own father, she is overprotective with her younger sister, with whom she lives with. After falling from the stairs, an injured neighbour is aided by the older sister. The paranoid woman develops a sinister obsession with the young man, slowly keeping him a prisoner inside her house. "Shrew's Nest" is a psychological horror movie portraying the disturbing mind of a woman who harbours terrible secrets. The main protagonist is trapped in her own madness, representing a deadly threat to those who are unlucky to enter her nest. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/28/24 Full Review chitown2bayarea Unbelievable performance by Macarena Gomez! Crept me out for the whole film! Must watch!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/24 Full Review Peter G Macarena Gomez, a Spanish actress new to me, gives a riveting & throughly creepy characterization of a psychologically afflicted dress maker in the second notable contemporary Spanish film (the first being THE INVISIBLE GUEST) that I have seen this week, SHREW‘S NEST. This picture is absorbing throughout & concerns this woman‘s ultimate deterioration into total madness after initially rescuing & eventually holding hostage a neighbor who arrives at her door having suffered a broken leg from a fall in their apt. complex. Similar in some ways to MISERY but even more complex in that it also portrays the controlling & disfunctional relationship with another younger family member living in the same apt. Family secrets are revealed amidst the ensuing chaos which builds to a devastating climax. The direction & script remain solid & surprisingly credible for such an potentially outlandish premise & although the rest of the cast is effective this is really Gomez‘ film & it makes me curious to see more of her work. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/12/23 Full Review Mike H Brilliant. Super suspenseful and twisty. If you're a Hitchcock fan you'd like this. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/15/22 Full Review Late R Tense with a well-written, complex central character (played wonderfully by Macarena Gómez), ‘Shrew's Nest' starts off as a family drama where it's immediately apparent that something isn't right and transitions into a psychological thriller with horror undertones that, gradually, reveals the reasons why things feel off in the household. It's a bit predictable which is something that could have been improved upon with a little rejigging of the screenplay, but it still leaves a strong impression. This isn't straight-up horror, but that doesn't mean that this slow-burning, Spanish film isn't scary in its own way. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/26/20 Full Review Read all reviews
