What to Know

Critics Consensus

Offensive in its depiction of autism -- and painfully misguided in essentially every respect -- Music is a vanity project that begs to be turned down.

Audience Says

Featuring depictions of autism and autistic behavior that are at best misguided and even arguably dangerous, this bafflingly star-studded film insults the people it tries to represent.

Christina Newland iNews.co.uk Music is less a person than a sympathetic vessel who is saddled with an oversimplified and loving worldview to impart to others, and as a result, the film lets the side down in its depiction of autistic people. Rated: 1/5 Sep 23, 2024 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review A completely misguided mess. Feb 25, 2021 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) It's pitiful stuff. Rated: 2/5 Feb 20, 2021 Full Review Calum Cooper In Their Own League It’s the definition of a vanity project, and the fact that it uses autism as a means to an end makes it a particularly putrid one. Rated: 0/5 Jul 14, 2024 Full Review Serena Seghedoni Loud and Clear Reviews the real issue is that, though the movie is centred and even takes its name from a nonverbal teenager who's on the low-functioning side of the autism spectrum, it doesn't seem to care about exploring who she really is. Rated: 2.5/5 Sep 18, 2023 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue For those buying into the manipulation, the film is padded with fantasy sequences that double as music videos for pop star Sia, whose directorial debut feels more self-indulgent than sincere. Todd J Worst movie I’ve ever seen. This is a zero star movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/25 Full Review Bayanda Princess Ntuli B I think that the movie is portraying what the world looks like in the eyes of an autistic person. The use of bright colours probably symbolises the way in which an autistic person sees the world,as beautiful and colourful. Music feels happier when she is in her own world and it helps to keep her afloat and under control. She is seeing the world in a different way, than we normal people do. And I personally would like to be in a world full of colour just like the one in Music. Nonetheless she is able to maintain personal hygiene, she can feed herself she can walk out alone, even though there's someone watching her from a distance,it shows that they trust her despite being autistic to do things by herself. But either way, this is just my opinion and people will always have some sort of criticism whether constructive or not but in this case it's horrid. We should appreciate someone else's vision because at the end of the day it's still there and there's nothing we can do about it. If you don't like it then don't watch it,or rather create your own if you think you can make something better. And again this is just my opinion 😅. Thought that the movie Music missed the mark in many ways,in terms of autism washing and no inputs from autistic people,I get that point, but was an autistic person going to be able to stick to the script? They can excel but the script did require an autistic person who cannot speak or understand so I'm wondeing, if they used one that can understand and speak that person would be... what did you call it? "Autism washing", and the one that can't speak or understand won't stick to the script. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/25 Full Review Frank O 7%?? This is totally political. I’m a Sia stan, but even still. The movie is decent. Plot, acting, music, are great. 7% is ridiculous. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/21/24 Full Review ‎ ‎ Yikes. This movie is so tasteless, tone-deaf, insulting, ableist, offensive, hideous, and even downright dangerous at times - under what circumstances is it okay to depict an autistic child being restrained, and what's more, making it seem like it's okay? The only thing preventing me from giving this a lower rating is the fact that I've seen worse, unfortunately. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/20/24 Full Review DrKristopher M The people who found this movie offensive aren't autistic. This movie was an absolute banger of creativity. If you ever wanted to crawl into the head of a creative person, and try to experience the world through their lens... This movie gives you the best chance of doing that. I loved the music, costumes, and dancing. It was extremely tasteful, respectful, and well done. I appreciate Sia for being courageous enough to give us this beautiful gem.
