Audience Member Sometimes sappy MGM musical drama gives both Margaret O'Brien and June Allyson a chance to shine; Jimmy Durante steals scenes, especially when singing "Umbriago." Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member ok WWII wartime musical Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member I honestly had never heard of this movie before I saw it the other night on TCM. I'm not a huge June Allyson fan, always playing the teary 'swell' girl-next-door to the extreme. But in this movie she was enchanting and it worked. But what really hooked me was Marsha Hunt. What a beautiful woman and great actress she was. The supporting female cast is also excellent, especially the whimsical Marie Windsor and the sultry Katherine Balfour. Jose Iturbi plays essentially himself perfectly along with Durante and a cast of well-known character actors. I did not think the ending was predictable, was surprised and shed a happy tear at the end. The music and the character interaction were great. O'Brien may have been a tad over the top, but it still worked better than had she been more low-keyed. Seriously considering buying the DVD. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member A likable World War Two home front film that showcases the world of a travelling symphony orchestra. Margaret is adorable and shares several sweet scenes with June Allyson and Jimmy Durante. The music is excellent, the acting superb and the plot very engaging. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Very endearing fare with June Allyson and little Margaret O'Brien teaming up as they did in my favorite version of Little Women. This has some wonderful examples of love and faith as the war is going on and an orchestra turns into mostly ladies. June Allyson's cello playing character is pregnant and her husband is at war..her little sister is a bright spot in her life. Good Movie! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member More moving than it should be thanks to the skillful playing of the cast even if Margaret O'Brien lays it on a bit thick. June is very fetching and Marie Wilson is endearing as the slightly airy clarinetist but best of all is Marsha Hunt a wonderful actress who never had the stardom she deserved. The music lead by Iturbi is wonderful too of course. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
