What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though My Days of Mercy's knotty romance drifts into melodrama, it's grounded by Elliot Page and Kate Mara's exceptional chemistry.

Peter Sobczynski RogerEbert.com A well-meaning but increasingly contrived melodrama that is hardly believable or meaningful. Rated: 2/4 Jul 5, 2019 Full Review Phil Hoad Guardian The effervescent chemistry between the two leads [saves] it from Sundance-y overearnestness. Rated: 3/5 May 15, 2019 Full Review Larushka Ivan-Zadeh Metro Newspaper (UK) Contrived yet interesting and undeniably erotic, it's a queer story in both senses. Rated: 4/5 May 15, 2019 Full Review tt stern-enzi Cincinnati CityBeat As heavy as it sounds, there’s a quiet intensity in the frames, which are teeming with raw Midwestern ordinary-ness on full display. Aug 26, 2023 Full Review Ben Turner The Pink Lens You do care about the couple, but you can't help but spend the movie shaking your head about how alien the US penal system is. But the film does little to either pluck at your heart-strings or ignite your outrage. Rated: 2/5 Sep 1, 2021 Full Review CJ Sheu Review Film Review This means that the death penalty parts are actually much better than the rom-com ones, and the disparity leads to some tonally awkward mid-scene transitions between the two. Joshua m Great acting by Page, Mara and Amy Seimetz. The film explores the complexity of the death penalty in subtle ways through a love story. It's a little slow at times but the pace is deliberate and well intended. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/27/24 Full Review charming m Come for the 'death penalty debate' and stay for the romance.... or come for the romance and stay for the death penalty argument.... either way it's highly watchable. actually, come to think of it, it's more of a sideways look at capital punishment with a romance thrown in, buoyed by great performances from the two protagonists Mara and Page, with just as many plaudits for the supporting cast. Standard US indie no, even if the girl-meets-girl hits standard romance tropes, your eyes are opened to the prison conundrum even if your mind isn't. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/16/24 Full Review Horror fan 4 What a great story about when opposite sides of the death penalty meet. Loved it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/16/24 Full Review PridePosterStudios “So where did you two meet?” Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/13/24 Full Review Andrei D A little too scattered Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Gotta say, strong performances all across the board with a heavy yet heartfelt, tragic story to tell.
