Devin B Good movie with solid acting in its leading roles! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/26/24 Full Review P H There are few films that really manage to touch the soul of the human being, and one of those is My Life, a movie that every time I watch it makes me think on what really matters in this journey that we are all on, with a totally touching and realistic drama that is the reality of many people out there who may be suffering from this type of disease, really makes me reevaluate my attitudes, with everyone around me, before it too late just like it was for Bobby. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/26/23 Full Review Wayne K Michael Keaton was a big deal in the early 90s thanks to starring in Beetlejuice and, to a much greater extent, the first 2 Tim Burton Batman movies. His branching out into more dramatic work produced mixed results; case in point, 1993's My Life. Keaton plays a man suffering from the most fearsome illness Hollywood has ever experienced: Movie disease. You might only have a few months or weeks to live if you catch it, but you'll look and sound pretty much perfect the whole time. The film itself has an inherently sweet premise, about a dying man recording all the aspects of his life to show to his new-born child who he might not be around long enough to meet. We find out he only has a few months left, but you wouldn't know it by looking at him. The movie never convinces you that Keaton's character Bob is sick. Aside from the odd cough or convulsion, he's just peachy. As a result, the story itself is a fairly lightweight look at terminal illness and how it can impact the lives of those around you. It's well acted, as you'd expect from the cast, and it's far less maudlin than I expected, but there's nothing about it that sticks out. Plenty of movies have covered disease, familial alienation, spousal alienation and the anticipation of fatherhood much better, so there's not a lot of reasons to watch it. A pleasant enough film to watch, but one that'll leave your psyche the second it's over. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/07/23 Full Review Steve D Keaton is good but the melodrama is too thick. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Probably the most underrated movie ever to be made. I really don't know why this isn't rated higher. A real emotional roller coaster. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member A little too sappy for me. Long, drawn out, boring as hell, it felt more like watching a Lifetime movie, and that's not a good thing. You would think this was every womans dream, by the way...have a baby, and then the man dies. Why was everyone crying at the end? Alistair Owen Time Out The only thing dense and expansive... is the sentimentality. Mar 4, 2019 Full Review Peter Travers Rolling Stone If there are a few nuggets of wit and wisdom buried under the film's disease-of-the-week surface, Rubin doesn't find them. Mar 4, 2019 Full Review Owen Gleiberman Entertainment Weekly Even as the characters grow huffy and "confront" each other, the movie never loses its compulsive desire to soothe. Rated: C+ Mar 4, 2019 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...an erratically-paced yet mostly engaging drama... Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 10, 2022 Full Review Chris Hicks Deseret News (Salt Lake City) The film is, as Rubin is fond of saying in interviews, a "life-affirming" film and has something to say about how we should view our brief stay on the planet. Mar 4, 2019 Full Review Malcolm Johnson Hartford Courant Despite all Rubin's efforts to bring life and energy to My Life, this is no roller-coaster ride. It's more like being stalled, with a newborn babe in arms, in the dead center of the bumper car ride. Apr 25, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews
