It seems that Bob Jones (Michael Keaton) has everything a man could want, namely a fulfilling job and a beautiful, pregnant wife, Gail (Nicole Kidman). But Bob's life is turned upside-down when he is diagnosed with cancer and given four months to live -- not even enough time to see his first child's birth. To cleanse himself of demons in his remaining days, Bob makes a video diary, hoping to pass along some wisdom to his future child. Along the way, he discovers a lot about himself.

Sebastian F Dec 28 A devastating meditation on legacy and mortality, this movie leverages Keaton's ineffable ability to oscillate between levity and gravitas. As a terminally ill exec racing to record himself for his unborn child, he transmutes quotidian moments into profound artifacts of existence. The film's denouement hits like a memento mori wrapped in celluloid - not because it's maudlin, but because it's mercilessly truthful about how we process impending oblivion. While the third act occasionally threatens to careen into saccharine territory, it ultimately sticks the landing with the same grace its protagonist learns to embrace. See more P H 07/26/2023 There are few films that really manage to touch the soul of the human being, and one of those is My Life, a movie that every time I watch it makes me think on what really matters in this journey that we are all on, with a totally touching and realistic drama that is the reality of many people out there who may be suffering from this type of disease, really makes me reevaluate my attitudes, with everyone around me, before it too late just like it was for Bobby. See more Wayne K 05/07/2023 Michael Keaton was a big deal in the early 90s thanks to starring in Beetlejuice and, to a much greater extent, the first 2 Tim Burton Batman movies. His branching out into more dramatic work produced mixed results; case in point, 1993's My Life. Keaton plays a man suffering from the most fearsome illness Hollywood has ever experienced: Movie disease. You might only have a few months or weeks to live if you catch it, but you'll look and sound pretty much perfect the whole time. The film itself has an inherently sweet premise, about a dying man recording all the aspects of his life to show to his new-born child who he might not be around long enough to meet. We find out he only has a few months left, but you wouldn't know it by looking at him. The movie never convinces you that Keaton's character Bob is sick. Aside from the odd cough or convulsion, he's just peachy. As a result, the story itself is a fairly lightweight look at terminal illness and how it can impact the lives of those around you. It's well acted, as you'd expect from the cast, and it's far less maudlin than I expected, but there's nothing about it that sticks out. Plenty of movies have covered disease, familial alienation, spousal alienation and the anticipation of fatherhood much better, so there's not a lot of reasons to watch it. A pleasant enough film to watch, but one that'll leave your psyche the second it's over. See more Steve D 02/21/2023 Keaton is good but the melodrama is too thick. See more 12/27/2021 Probably the most underrated movie ever to be made. I really don't know why this isn't rated higher. A real emotional roller coaster. See more Read all reviews
