If only Benson had a more dynamic visual style, he could cross over to directing TV spots. But since his dim imagination and dead eye are not up to that exacting task, I suggest he might be most fruitfully employed drawing Cokes at some concession stand. Go to Full Review

I didn't laugh very much in this movie. There were a couple of genuinely funny moments, but they didn't build and the movie didn't redeem itself by making me very interested in the characters. Go to Full Review

Writer-director Benton’s feeling for the endless surprises of domestic intimacy (Kramer vs. Kramer) and the built-in resilience of Southern communal life (Places in the Heart) come together in this lighthearted mock-thriller. Go to Full Review

The uneven, insubstantial slapstick comedy is good for a few chuckles playing the white trash joke card. Go to Full Review

An innocuous little wisp of a romantic comedy, spiced up with some chases, escapes, and even a few gunfights. Go to Full Review

Will M 06/23/2024 Really enjoyed this movie. Jeff and Kim are excellent and so is Rip Torn. Trust me! See more I M 03/30/2024 Although the production/direction/cinematography and even the plot and writing are mediocre at best, the 50's atmosphere is convincing and Kim Basinger's performance is terrific. See more Ian M 01/13/2023 Loved this, stars have real chemistry See more steve d 01/07/2023 Does not work as a thriller or a comedy. See more 05/17/2015 good period pic rom-com combo See more 03/30/2013 Robert Benton (Bonnie and Clyde," "Nobody's Fool,"Billy Bathgate") has always been a favorite writer/director of mine who doesn't seem to be talked about enough. In this comedy of his, which barely got a theatrical release, Kim Basinger has a role that was literally written for her. After appearing in so many weak films, it's easy to forget that Basinger can really act, given the right role. She plays a soon to be divorcee in 1950s Texas going to recover some "artistic" pictures of herself from a sleazy photographer, only to witness his murder. Screwball comedy ensues involving her soon to be ex-husband, Jeff Bridges, his new girlfriend, Glenne Headly, and local crime boss Rip Torn. For what seems like a rather silly movie, you've got some serious talent behind the camera, including Howard Shore doing the music, Paul Sylbert doing the spot on period production design and even Ingmar Bergman's regular cinematographer, Néstor Almendros. It's a charming little romantic comedy that a lot of people missed. See more Read all reviews
