Roxana Hadadi Chesapeake Family Magazine Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase is a pleasing return to the kind of storytelling captured in those books, in which a mystery is tidily solved through logic and cleverness. Rated: 4/5 Mar 23, 2019 Full Review Rafer Guzman Newsday Lillis shines as the brainy detective, but the movie itself is none too bright. Rated: 1.5/4 Mar 21, 2019 Full Review Rex Reed Observer Ineffectual, irrelevant and amateurishly conceived from start to finish, this movie is so bad it could kill off Nancy Drew forever. Rated: 1/4 Mar 18, 2019 Full Review Jason Shawhan Nashville Scene A surprisingly entertaining effort from all involved. Sep 10, 2021 Full Review Bill Newcott Movies For The Rest Of Us This screen incarnation of America's favorite teenaged detective gives us permission to celebrate a world where the only superpowers anyone needs are intelligence, curiosity, compassion and kindness. Rated: 3/5 Jul 27, 2020 Full Review Shannon McGrew Nightmarish Conjurings [Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase ] is a film that will be empowering to young girls and boys as it is a reminder that adventure and mystery await... Sandi V The original Nancy Drew books do a huge misservice to this film. The books written by Carolyn Keene manage to completely misrepresent the characters in this film. For example, did you know that Hannah is really a foul-mouthed 30-ish aunt of Nancy's who places the personal profit of her pie shop above the wishes of her neighbourhood? Who knew! Carson Drew is much younger than his book character and usually unshaven. His haggard expression and overly lean physique would scare any kid off drugs. I suppose in this way he still serves as a model to the community. I am utterly disappointed that Carolyn Keene failed to disclose that George, Nancy's tomboy friend, is actually African American. And George's caucasian cousin Bess isn't overweight at all, just clutzy! Maybe in author Keene's time, more teenage girls had weight issues than they have today? Nancy, as originally written by Carolyn Keene, was just so uptight! She dressed conservatively, drove her own car, never lied, and broke no laws. Boring! Nancy in this film wears her cool, torn jeans throughout the film, and a long plaid shirt that hides her figure because she feels empowered to feel and look like a boy. Way to go, girl! She hates River Heights so much that she skateboards at night down the middle of its streets hoping some absentminded driver will put her out of her misery. Halfway through this film, I started thinking where I could buy a skateboard of my own.
