Audience Member Nebraska is a subtilely simple masterpiece. Black and white and all. For the life of me I cannot remember ever using "masterpiece" in a movie review. Yet I would be wordless in conveying the extreme brilliance of Nebraska if "masterpiece" didn't exist in the English dictionary. Exemplifying my impassioned sentiment of Nebraska, is that not once during the 2 hour film did I feel unengaged for a milli-second (at least I didn't. The mid 20's twosome behind me may have thought differently... once they woke up). Nebraska definitely will not be everybody's "cup of tittie" (i.e. if you're an actioneer). But the point of writing a review is to convey how it made you feel. And the above words are only my own, used to convey my own personal thoughts. Magnificently conceived, crafted and brought to screen-life by Alexander Payne, it surpasses his previous work of cinematic art: the George Clooney led The Descendants. Where The Descendants populated everyone's 2011 Top 10 List, I pray to the Gods that Nebraska will too. Where The Descendants racked up multiple Academy Award Nominations (Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Direct and winning for Best Adapted Screenplay), I pray to the Gods that Nebraska will rack up a billion too (of course I'm exaggerating with a billion. But I cannot EMPHASIZE ENOUGH how deserved Nebraska is of any and every award accolade it can be considered for). If I was a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences I would HURL at Nebraska nominations for: -> Best Picture - the sly, wacky, witty, dry, and sometimes dark humour makes Nebraska a truly beloved dramedy. -> Best Director - You're reading my review right? -> Best Cinematography - Gorgeous barren prairie landscapes; perfectly framed family scenes; EVERYTHING about the cinematography is mesmerizing -> Best Actress for June Squibb as Kate Grant, whose vulgarity, sexuality and outright shotgun attitude is wildly hilarious and gripping, She truly is the guiding North Star in the Nebraska heavens -> Best Supporting Actor for Will Forte. Even though he looks and sounds like he does on SNL, his restraint, subdued performance and emotionally real approach to David makes you applaud him as a dramatic actor -> Best Old Senile Fart for Bruce Dern as Woody Grant. Dern plays Woody with a heart of rusted gold; restrained social engaging; and spot-on geriatric physical embracement. Woody has the drive of a warrior on the fighting fields of war. His character is the basis for everyone else's. His actions promote eccentrically loony reactions of everyone else. Woody's interplay, actions and life events epitomizes him as one dimensional character trying to survive in the three dimensional world surrounding him . If I was to psycho-analyze why I nearly died smiling and chuckling my way through Nebraska, I'm sure it's because of my (a) love for dysfunctional family and character pieces; but more seriously (b) my connection to the bare bone basic, unwealthy & inconsequential small town community life. Where you live in a place that's considered the middle of nowhere; only travelled through to get to somewhere more important. The landscape and black-and-white filtered atmosphere of Montana/Nebraska (especially the seen-before but still arrestingly appropriate and effective final shot) is so resonating that the film made me feel as if I was living there; living through the spectacle of Woody's obstinate but tenacious plight. Cause really folks, who would you EVER desire to life the life of Woody in Montana/Nebraska? Where The Artist attempted to mimic the black and white silent movie era of the 1920's (boringly insignificant in my humbling "critic"al opinion), Nebraska is truly the black and white real deal. After the likes of Nebraska, The Descendants, About Schmidt and "alright I guess I will but not with gusto" Sideways, I have jumped onto the Alexander Payne movie bandwagon. And I can only anxiously anticipate what he will do next. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
