During the Cold War, the CIA secretly raised a sunken Soviet nuclear submarine from the depths of the Pacific Ocean. The six-year operation included an intricate cover story by billionaire Howard Hughes. Drawing on declassified documents and never-before-seen interviews, NEITHER CONFIRM NOR DENY tells one of the highest-stakes, yet least known stories of the Cold War.

Robert Abele Los Angeles Times This is a heist saga designed to enthrall in its ingenuity and ambition, one of the more presentable cases of cowboy spycraft from an us-versus-them time. Sep 25, 2023 Full Review John Anderson Wall Street Journal In exploring the issues that were and are involved, the film goes far deeper, as it were, than the seagoing Cold War caper thriller it naturally wants to be. Sep 21, 2023 Full Review Nicolas Rapold New York Times [A] neat and steadily paced documentary... Sep 21, 2023 Full Review Anthony Francis Film Threat Neither Confirm Nor Deny plays like a Tom Clancy thriller and opens a little-known door in American history. Rated: B Oct 1, 2023 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue Giving fresh relevance to an obscure piece of Cold War history, this fascinating documentary about international espionage and bureaucratic subterfuge from 50 years ago plays out like an urgent thriller. Greg R Seriously? This is a two hour documentary that could have been made in 30 minutes. Giant yawn. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/03/23 Full Review Karl B If you like documentaries you will love it. I knew much of this story because I grew up next door to David Sharp, the project lead, and as an adult had read his book "The CIA's Greatest Covert Operation: Inside the Daring Mission to Recover a Nuclear-Armed Soviet Sub", so it was really wonderful to see this story told on screen. The book is long, detailed, and interesting for those (like me) who like details. The movie captures the most important technical elements of the book more succinctly, but it also includes the global political context of that period, including the political and news personalities of the day, and the political distractions of Watergate that were going on at the same time. While the technical aspects of the project were adequately daunting, and the challenge of making the pretext of the covert operation plausible were on the edge of achievable, the continued approval of the project right up to the president was always at risk. We've all enjoyed fiction by Clancy and the like and known as we are reading that it is a work of art by a writer. But this documentary is a story about an event that unfolded with just as much drama, but this time in real life, and told with interviews and historical footage with people who were really there.
