The movie is a crime. Not only is it horribly inept and unimaginative in everything that does not center on jazz; the jazz itself is too often cut short, or smothered as background for pictures which fail to carry it out. Go to Full Review

One of those films where the story gets in the way of the performers, and that's a darn shame because the performers are Satchmo Armstrong and Billie Holiday. Go to Full Review

Anabel G 01/30/2021 If only for the music and to hear Billie Holiday at her best. The script is dreadful; the acting good to terrible; costuming almost laughable. However, some of the New Orleans scenes are excellent; showing us Basin Street before it became a tourist destination. Still, Billie Holiday; I repeat, Billie Holiday. Also Louis Armstrong and his Band; Woody Herman and his band, and some lovely classical music. And, Billie Holiday. It is about a gambling hall owner who relocates from New Orleans to Chicago. Arturo de Cordova and Dorothy Patrick give good performances. The screenplay is a little slow in places. Arthur Lubin did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture because of the drama and music. See more 08/19/2015 For a movie about the birth of Jazz, there sure are a lot of rich white folks talking throughout this movie. Not to say that there is anything wrong with movies about rich white folks, Wall Street was a great movie, one of my favorites of all time. The music in New Orleans was good, but not worth sifting through all of the wooden chemistry of the protagonists.
