Mooney (Liane Balaban) feels trapped in her small coastal Canadian town, and with good reason: When she told her parents that her teacher Cecil (Andrew McCarthy) had offered her a spot at an art school in New York, her parents forbade her to go. Then surly Lou (Tara Spencer-Nairn) moves into the neighborhood, reportedly from Manhattan. After quickly becoming friends, the two girls hatch a scheme to escape their provincial prison utilizing Lou's improbable boxing skills.

An indie gem from 20 years ago that has been pretty much forgotten. This energetic character-driven romp also serves as a coming-of-age tale with some surprising character depth amidst it's drab settings and comedic tone.

This totally hits all the notes it wants to. The comedy is great combination of physicality and small town social commentary. The characters are great and well-performed. And, I think I may gotten the DP his gig on this without him ever knowing! I worked with Derek Rogers on a couple of shorts. Then I was asked by a film friend if I knew any DPs as he knew a producer on New Waterford Girl and they were looking for one. A year and half later I see the poster and there's Derek's name on it. How about that.

It's impossible to enjoy every movie about an outsider's life in the province. This one is one of the worst on the topic - with unconvincing acting and a phony plot.
