Carla Renata TheWrap “Nickel Boys” hearkens back to a time that unfortunately still exists in some areas of America, even today. Phenomenal performances form Brandon Wilson, Ethan Herisse and the incomparable Aunjanue Eliis-Taylor Sep 7, 2024 Full Review Maureen Lee Lenker Entertainment Weekly Nickel Boys is a fragmented film, so much so that it can be difficult to grasp it. But at a certain point, it turns around and grabs you instead, refusing to let go until you're left sitting in a startling and stunned silence. Rated: A- Sep 3, 2024 Full Review Peter Debruge Variety For the first hour or so, Nickel Boys feels like the most exciting narrative debut since Beasts of the Southern Wild. Then Ross tries something bold that doesn't quite work, and the experiment collapses upon itself. Sep 3, 2024 Full Review Gregory Ellwood The Playlist One could also argue that “Nickel Boys” needs a little more Terrence Malick inspiration to serve Ross’ vision. Rated: B- Sep 6, 2024 Full Review Sophia Ciminello AwardsWatch The film’s impressionistic style recalls Ross’s groundbreaking work in his Academy Award-nominated documentary, Hale County This Morning, This Evening, yet feels like an even more clarified exploration of person and place in Nickel Boys. Don Birnam Next Best Picture By the time the credits roll, Ross will have made a lasting and unique impression of heartbreak on the souls of all who watch his film—precisely the cinematic treatment that Whitehead’s novel required.
