In retrospect, you definitely get the sense that Norm is aware that this very well could be his final act, with the specter of his illness and impending death recoloring his sardonic, macabre musings as barely veiled truths.

"Hitler's Dog" starts in the middle of a joke and it ends abruptly. In bookending his show this way, Mr. Macdonald not only toys with the meaning of a joke, but he also drives home the point that the part can be funnier than the whole.

Macdonald's rhythm can be confusing: he interrupts himself without any justification, until one realizes that everything is perfectly planned so that the joke settles and we keep laughing while we ruminate on the meaning of its impassive punch-lines.

While others zig, Macdonald doesn't zag, but instead chooses to plow straight ahead. His observational comedy can focus so narrowly on the target that it strikes the true bull's eye of the premise.
