Jan Dawson Sight & Sound Diane bears all the outward signs of a contemporary heroine (autonomous working woman setting out alone on existential quest), she defines herself and is in turn defined exclusively through her relationships with men. Mar 17, 2020 Full Review Kathleen Sachs Chicago Reader I find Tewkesbury's restraint more interesting, as it results in something hazily impenetrable and truer to the often ambiguous nature of people's thoughts and motivations. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 23, 2019 Full Review Richard Brody New Yorker Tewkesbury evokes a Hitchcockian depth of subjectivity in what is essentially a first-person survey of women's hidden terrors. Jul 29, 2019 Full Review Kathy Fennessy Seattle Film Blog If Old Boyfriends isn't completely successful, not least in the way Dianne's suitors outshine her in the charisma department, [Joan] Tewkesbury's sole theatrical feature deserves better than it got in 1979. Rated: 3/4 May 8, 2022 Full Review Elissa Suh Moviepudding The film treads too softly and ignores pointed observation by sweeping Shire's character's major depression under the proverbial rug, and the performances and mise en scene in this movie don't exactly enthrall. Sep 14, 2021 Full Review Cody Corrall Girls On Tops (Read Me) While the story is technically about old boyfriends, Old Boyfriends is more interested in examining who Diane is without them. Audience Member Boring. They should not show this movie 2019... I am scared for my life after letting the director put my brain into the microwave please, This movie is a pity. feminist trash 👎👎 Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Uneven feminist take on love, revenge, loss, and an uncertain future for a clinical psychologist who is rather whacko herself. It's hard to know if we're supposed to feel sympathy for Dianne Cruise - ultimately, not so much. John Belushi shows some dramatic acting chops, even if his character is a cad. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member She's got bats in the belfry. Hope she's not on facebook. Worth watching for all Buck Henry fans. Belushi is great in this as well.
