Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times There is a potentially wonderful story at the heart of Old Gringo, but the movie never finds it -- the screenplay blasts away in every direction except the bulls-eye. Rated: 2/4 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) The most unjustly vilified move of the year. Blu B If you ever seen a movie like Havana, or Doctor Zhivago than you know what I mean when I say it's trying to be a war drama. What's crazy is the production value, cinematography (which isn't bad overall), and cast is all here for a great drama. But it meanders terribly. The editing and pacing are not good at all. It feels like stuff just happens and it never forms a cohesive story but rather just events that happen and it gets SOOOOOO boring. It never is able to make the melodrama elements, and war plot and make it work together coheisvely at all. The acting is suprisingly just ok as well mainly thanks to the very meandering dialouge. Peck & Fonda are great actors but they aren't given anything to work with. The music is alright and this is a very beautiful film to look at. It's boring but pretty to look at is the best compliment I can give this. The camerawork is great, the sets and the battle in the first half is AMAZING. But it just is a slow slog downhill the entire way that never goes anywhere. Skip This. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/13/24 Full Review Steve D A train wrek despite its cast. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/07/23 Full Review Audience Member It's quite empty in story, but it has a good epic atmosphere, good characters and good interpretations. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Frances H One would think a movie with Gregory Peck playing Ambrose Bierce and starring Jane Fonda as the female lead would be a really fascinating flick, but Peck seems to flounder, Fonda acts like a flustered ditz, and the script is abysmal. A big disappointment. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/09/15 Full Review Audience Member 79% "I'm looking for Villa."-Ambrose "Bitter" Bierce (Gregory Peck) Lavish production about love, self discovery, revolution, and the Truth. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member one peck's final film he is perfectly cast as the title character. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Read all reviews
