scott f Superb doc from Chantal Akerman on German modern dance icon Pina Bausch's company during a five-week tour in 1983. Focuses primarily on the "dance" itself, a marvelous choice. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review walter m "One Day Pina Asked Me" is an incisive documentary about the work of famed choreographer Pina Bausch, as Chantal Akerman follows her on tour across Europe. As such, most of the talking done is by the dancing, both in rehearsal and in performance(there is laughter from the unseen audience which surprised me). What little actual talking there is describes the dances being about the relationships between men and women, albeit in an unorthodox manner but it works nonetheless. This method of communication is necessary for a dancing troupe that comes from so many countries.(At one point, they list three things from each of their countries.) That might explain why one of the dancers learned sign language on his break, demonstrating it using a George Gershwin song which gets incorporated into its very own dance number.
