In this musical, flower merchant Lilli (Evelyn Laye) is barely scraping by on the cold streets of Budapest, Hungary, when her resemblance to brash opera singer Fritzi Vajos (Lilyan Tashman) offers a unique opportunity. When Fritzi's scandalous behavior earns her a forced vacation at the isolated estate of Count Mirko Tibor (John Boles), she hires Lilli to go in her place. Surrounded by luxury, Lilli initially revels in her ruse, but later faces a dilemma when she falls for the dashing Tibor.

s r A happy musical filmed in CA, but it's a Hungarian oriented romantic musical. All things Hungarian are of interest to me, so I gave it a shot watching TCM. However, it was a bit run of the mill with big focus on the gags of Errol who was a bit flat to me. The rest had allusions to Hungary, but it ultimately wasn't enough to keep my interest. All in all it passed the time. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Samuel Goldwyn's only filmed operetta isn't half bad, as operettas go; Laye is enchanting, Leon Errol is interminable.
