Audience Member A transsexual couple who have not only gone through reassignment surgery from male to female together, but are also surgically altering themselves to look identical. An intersexual woman, in a relationship with a man, who falls in love with one of the aforementioned twins-to-be. A gay man who picks up a guy in a bar and discovers that the pickup is transitioning from a female biology. He falls in love regardless. âOpen❠sounds like an exploitative freak show that relies on the charactersâ(TM) unusual sexual and gender identities to keep the viewer interested. Thankfully what Jake Yuzna offers is a lyrically beautiful and, yes, open psychological drama about life in its enriching diversity. The characters get fleshed out well, and they are ultimately much more than mere case examples. I think that the vague gender actually establishes them more strongly as individuals. Some of the acting by the amateur cast is quite poor, and the end is annoyingly condescending, hammering the meaning behind every obvious symbol in with full force. But all the tender beauty and restraint, present through most of the film, are sufficiently redeeming. The end result is obviously flawed yet exceptionally interesting and very different.
