Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times Anchored by an engaging turn by Topher Grace as Nick, a failed Broadway performer turned stage manager, the film, directed by Isaac Rentz from a script by Gerry De Leon and Greg Lisi, packs plenty of music and mischief into its brief running time. Jul 9, 2019 Full Review Alistair Ryder Gay Essential Don't be put off by the premise - Opening Night is a consistently funny and highly quotable directorial debut. Oct 8, 2018 Full Review Morgan Rojas Cinemacy The fluidity of the film's pacing and timed comedic beats, coupled with a solid cast of outstanding performances, makes Opening Night worth a standing ovation. Aug 6, 2018 Full Review Lea Palmieri Decider Opening Night is just the right amount of pervy fun to make it a worthwhile watch due to this ensemble...and yes, specifically because of JC. Dec 19, 2017 Full Review Frannie Ucciferri Common Sense Media Uneven backstage Broadway comedy has sex, swearing. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Hilarious! I loved every character and how in a very short time you get to know them and adore them! Also music is amazing 👏 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member I enjoyed this incredibly more than I thought I was going to. I accidentally came across it recently, and the cast list made it seem too interesting to ignore. I was even impressed with JC Chasez; I had no idea he was an actor. Topher Grace has yet to NOT be amazing in anything I have seen him in, and he continues the streak in this movie. Incorporate the occasional dance and song to a famous one-hit-wonder and zingy (and hilarious) dialogue, and this is a hit. I am surprised it did not get more attention. I know I'm late, but I'm glad I was able to show up at all. It is playing on Netflix right now, but I bought it on Amazon, anyway. :) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Actually pretty fun, funny but not in a forced way, the music is 90s and early 2000s and not over the top. ending was a little lame and obvious but I'm not sorry I watched this, it was worth a viewing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/13/19 Full Review Audience Member Surprisingly engrossing! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/19/18 Full Review Audience Member Strengths: Everything taking place on one night allowed the film to move at a quick pace. That, combined with some fun performances, made this work. Topher Grace (Nick) and Alona Tal (Chloe) are good, while Taye Diggs (Malcolm) and JC Chasez (Himself) steal the show. JC especially did a wonderful job making fun of himself. The movie itself did well in poking fun at the musical genre in general. Some of the highlights include a sing-off between Diggs and Lesli Margherita (Brandy), Grace finally breaking into song and every single thing Chasez did. Weaknesses: Every character is given something to do, they're just not all very good. Anne Heche (Brooke) feels kind of wasted and her side storyline isn't very funny. Considering she gets concussed and given ecstasy, there were missed opportunities for comedy there. Rob Riggle (Goldmeyer) is usually over the top, but it's a bit much here and it becomes campy. There was also a side story of a character needing to do drugs before performing. It gave only mild laughs and didn't add much to the overall film. Lastly, though I enjoyed the dynamic between Chloe and Nick, it ended on quite the clichéd note and didn't really feel that earned. Maybe a bit more time could've been spent on that relationship than some of the lesser side plots. Overall: I liked this a lot more than expected. Most of the cast perform well, with standout performances from Digg and Chasez. Some of the side plots missed the mark, and a few things become cliché near the end, but this was a fun ride.
