The direction is solid in the first act, pulling you into a world of mystery and romance, but as the film progresses, it starts to feel a bit uneven. There are moments where the storytelling builds tension effectively, but then it stumbles with some forced scenes that don't entirely fit the character arcs. The script is melodramatic, leaning into its themes of obsession and betrayal, though it sometimes feels more like it's trying to be provocative rather than meaningful. Angelina Jolie carries the film effortlessly, giving a performance that elevates even the weaker parts of the script. Antonio Banderas does well too, but his character feels more reactive than driving the story. The chemistry is there, but certain scenes, especially one in particular, feel out of place given the way the characters were set up earlier. The score complements the film's mood but isn’t particularly memorable. Overall, Original Sin is a stylish but flawed film that keeps you watching, even if it never fully delivers on its initial promise. Even if the screenplay has its weaknesses and plot holes, the acting and directing surpassed the storyline by far: it was all catchy, passionate, heart felt, sincere, and beautiful. The on-screen chemistry between Banderas and Jolie, that basic passion they made, came so natural and convincing, I'd say the strongest one I ever saw with any of them. They were like two balls of energy, completely destroying each-other, and still drawn to each other with a deadly power beyond resistence. That was no "romantic" or love story, like the million others, that was a wild toxic relationship, that was, in its own way, incredibly beautiful and real. As for the critic's vote of 12% on this movie... I believe those are the same esteemed experts who made the Avatar sequel one of the highest-rated ever million-dollar budget complete on screen disasters. And they rated Meryl Streep's "House of the spirits" average. So... there are obviously differences of opinions here. If you haven't watched this, see for yourself and make your own mind. It's a true love story, true love, and it's dark. If you're looking for a fairy tale romance this isn't for you. But what do I know, I think Leaving Las Vegas was a tragic love story. Angelina and Antonio are wonderful together. So convincing and real. The costume design alone deserves special mentioning. A beautiful film visually. The plot is just as beautifully dramatic and thrilling. Sometimes I just want to see total desolation and romantic despair and this is exactly what this movie offers. A sad, realistic and convincing love story. The filmed locations are wonderful and worth checking out too. You won't get bored. The ending has an uplifting message. So worth it.
