Audience Member I don't know much of this culture, and I found this doc to be tremendously insightful. On the short side and very broad in scope, but good for those wishing to merely glimpse into this modern cultural phenomenon. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Watching this film started to make me hate my own interest. This, I'm sure, wasn't the goal of this documentary, but that's what happened. While watching this I grew to hate the people on screen. Most are elitist douche bags, that have almost literally no idea what they are talking about. I'm happy to not be an "Otaku", I'd be angry or insulted to be called one. I enjoy animation, all types of animation. I'll be damned if I start becoming like these people. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member For some reason, I found myself really enjoying this documentary. Granted, it's not as outright humorous as "Trekkies" (or so I've heard), but it provides quite a bit of history about the rise of anime popularity in the west. Some may feel this renders the film a bit dry at times, but it didn't put me off for some reason. You'll probably get more out of this if you already have some exposure to anime, but it's not a bad film apart from that if you can get past the slow bits. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member As someone who was somewhat of an otaku at some point (I really miss those days, I haven't been engrossed in an anime series in such a long time), I really enjoyed watching this movie. I've been to about 2 anime conventions in my life and I had such a great time. The vibe was good, there were lots of things to do, and it's just really fun in general. Yes, you have to get over some types of "nerds" but it's all in fun. The film does a good job of detailing the history of anime and it's rise in popularity in the US as well as the history of anime conventions. Ha, Trish Ledoux wasn't what I expected her to look like. I'm glad she made an appearance in this film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member It's sort of hard to find decent ... make that "decent" documentaries on a subject that is so closely linked to nerd obsession, anime, but Otaku Unite! is surprisingly lucid and even occasionally insightful.
