However, the editing feels off to me, the scene cuts are jolting, with some moments lasting only seconds, clearly there just to step the story along. The cutting-room floor must have been absolutely littered, and what shreds survived has been shoddily stitched together. The result is a film with decent performances and scale, but fragmented and not fully satisfying. Since it’s based on a true story, knowing the background really helps you understand the characters and their motivations. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a movie made this well. The atmosphere, the acting, and especially the battles are incredible. The fight scenes feel raw, intense, and realistic — you can almost feel the cold and the mud with them. Chris Pine gives a commanding yet deeply human performance as Robert — a man torn between duty, faith, and survival. Florence Pugh (Elizabeth de Burgh) brings emotional strength to a role that could have easily been sidelined; her quiet resilience mirrors Robert’s own fight. And Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s portrayal of James Douglas is pure ferocity — unpredictable, loyal, and unforgettable. The film’s tone is raw and honest. Its battles — especially the brutal climax at Loudoun Hill — are violent but never gratuitous, showing the true ugliness of medieval warfare. The dialogue feels natural, significant, and free from the over-scripted polish that weakens so many historical dramas. Visually, it’s stunning yet restrained — the Scottish landscapes feel as important as any character. David Mackenzie’s direction keeps you close to the dirt and blood, emphasizing that victory here isn’t about glory, but survival. Historically, the film stays impressively close to the known record. It captures not only the events but the political atmosphere — a nation under pressure, nobles divided by loyalty and fear, and a people forced to choose between submission and freedom. Este filme não supera a do Mel, em nenhuma das áreas, enredo, diálogos, fotografia, interpretação, emoção, nos coadjuvantes,.... Mas não que deixe de ser uma produção ruim. Enquanto Coração é um 10 aqui no Legítimo Rei um 7. O enredo é muito parecido, apenas o motivo é diferente, enquanto oque motivou William Wallace a batalha contra os Ingleses, aqui o que motiva o Rei Roberto a quebra de acordo com o Rei Eduardo, veio depois de esquartejar Wallace e ver que o povo se revolta. E pelo povo e pela Escócia luta. Mas a forma como isso são colocados é bem diferente se vermos Gibson com toda a sua revolta e irá se acende, com Pine foi muito mais light. E temos aqui como a rainha Elizabeth (Pugh). As primeiras armada contra o inimigo o exercito de Roberto quase é dizimado sobrando apenas alguma dezena de soldados e quando tudo aparece perder Roberto continua e de novas e novas batalhando vencendo e vencendo. Mesmo tendo irmãos mortos e sua esposa e filha capturadas. Até a batalha final onde como em uma batalha de David contra o Gigante, Roberto vence e o novo rei Eduardo filho do antigo que morreu. É humilhado nesta derota. O filme se passa pelos anos 1300 e 300 anos depois temos sentando um descendente de Roberto sentando como rei da Inglaterra. Vale apena assistir? Como disse a comparação com Coração Valente ele perde em tudo. Mas se você não assistiu, assita 1º este e depois Coração.
