Critics Consensus

The cracks continue to show in Coppola's directorial style, but The Outsiders remains a blustery, weird, and fun adaptation of the classic novel.

Kevin Maher The Times (UK) It's beautifully shot, written and paced, but the cast, really, is the thing. Rated: 4/5 Oct 15, 2021 Full Review Danny Leigh Financial Times The movie is sincerely anguished, sensitive to class. It can also wobble alarmingly. Rated: 3/5 Oct 14, 2021 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian It is a movie with the heartfelt old-fashioned urgency of a Hollywood film from much further back, with the Brat Pack in this film the equivalent of the Dead End Kids who made Angels With Dirty Faces in the 1930s. Rated: 5/5 Oct 14, 2021 Full Review Megan Fisher Loud and Clear Reviews It’s about as realistic a depiction as West Side Story, but Coppola tells the story with a moving sympathy and romance. Jan 11, 2025 Full Review Harry Solomons Loud and Clear Reviews Uniquely and stunningly overdramatic, The Outsiders is turned by Francis Ford Coppola and his cast, against all odds, into an incredibly engrossing picture. Rated: 3.5/5 Jan 8, 2025 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies The Outsiders - The Complete Novel becomes a stronger film because of Coppola's decision to restore deleted scenes and give the film a new score and soundtrack. sauce1974 This movie is timeless. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/01/24 Full Review Daniel We liked it because it stirred our emotions. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/22/21 Full Review David M This film is a breath of fresh air, and would prefer the complete novel than the original one because the original had some stuff that was left out in the film. Definitely recommended as a unified classic from the book. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/18/25 Full Review Maxwell D This would be way better if the ending was actually like the book's ending. Otherwise, it still wouldn't be good. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/11/25 Full Review Emily H. This movie made my childhood. I’m obsessed with this movie and I will never live it down. The cast is the big thing. I could never imagine someone else playing the characters than the original cast. Rip Patrick Swayze. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/04/25 Full Review Julian Rex M The social commentary and dramatic depth of S.E. Hinton's classic young adult novel is sorely missed in Francis Ford Coppola's The Outsiders--a stagey adaptation that often finds its efforts to evoke emotion undermined by flat performances and somewhat histrionic storytelling.
