Keith Phipps Uproxx It's as remarkable a depiction of how grief can subsume us and bend reality to its needs as you'll ever see, directed by a talent with a bright future behind the camera. Jun 15, 2017 Full Review Mark Dujsik RogerEbert.com The film, a strong directorial debut from Tamblyn, creates a waking nightmare of seemingly unresolvable pain and anguish." Rated: 3/4 May 20, 2017 Full Review Tricia Olszewski TheWrap Tamblyn may very well have encouraged McTeer to spin into a ludicrous lioness, but her performance doesn't play well opposite Shawkat's. May 19, 2017 Full Review David Bax Battleship Pretension If that sounds a bit florid, then you've got the idea. Paint It Black is purple and overcooked, swelling to burst with rococo emotion. It doesn't always hold together but it's too outstanding to be ignored. Jan 6, 2021 Full Review Steven Prokopy Third Coast Review Tamblyn shows a confident hand at directing the difficult and emotionally complex material, while drawing out a truly haunting performance by Shawkat. May 8, 2020 Full Review Barbara Shulgasser Common Sense Media Artsy, non-linear tale with suicide, drinking, sex. Rated: 1/5 Nov 1, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

anthony b Freckles from Arrested Development tries to be taken seriously as an actor with Paint It Black, an art house indie that plays like a David Lynch/Nicolas Winding Refn mashup for millennials. Don't get me the wrong, the first half hour has potential because it is fascinating despite not being particularly entertaining, but it is all downhill after the first 40 mins, and the last act is an absolute trainwreck. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Artistic cinematography without any purpose. Tries too hard to be edgy. Disappointing. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review ben c A walk through darkness with Shawkat and I would walk with her anywhere. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Sad, atmospheric, beautiful film about love and loss. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/18 Full Review Audience Member I really enjoyed this book when I read it years ago and hoped that a great adaptation would be made. I was disappointed after watching it. They chose the wrong lead for Josie. Just because an actress is a good actress doesn't mean she's the right actress. Casting aside, the movie itself was well directed and the acting itself was pretty good. I would recommend watching it, but don't expect it to be something you will revisit. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member an absorbing piece of art nuevo, check this one out fast. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/21/17 Full Review Read all reviews
