Critics Consensus

While the jolts and thrills are undeniably subject to the diminishing returns that plague most horror sequels, Paranormal Activity 3 is a surprisingly spine-tingling treat.

Dylan Scott Vox Fresh feeling and a gloriously gonzo finale. Oct 19, 2018 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com It's another low-budget, high-concept excursions into shock horror filmmaking that once again uses the audience's imagination against them to produce a wild flurry of shrieks and scares. Rated: 2.5/4 Jan 27, 2012 Full Review Jim Schembri The Age (Australia) PA3 not only delivers quality jolts in spades, it turns out to be much scarier than The Blair Witch Project. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 24, 2011 Full Review Iván Kazi EscribiendoCine Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman's new collaboration doesn't irritate but doesn't excite either. The film tries to scare us but instead delivers insignificant bursts of repeated jolts. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 4/10 Sep 20, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The characters here are little more than victims predestined to their fate, since we’ve already witnessed what happened to Katie and Kristi. Ostensibly, we’re watching a supernatural snuff film. Rated: 1.5/4 Mar 7, 2023 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com It's a flimsy and transparent story that doesn't hold up to even the most shallow of examinations. Audience Member 73% not the best characters is what ruined this for me good scares some of the scenes were interesting definitely the kitchen when everything fell and the ending was wow Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/12/24 Full Review Aidan B "Paranormal Activity 3" does a great job at expanding the world but never really feels like anything too unique. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/22/24 Full Review Horror library 1 This is the best paranormal activity movie in the franchise for sure. I Ioved increasing of scare factors, suspense and dark mythology in this movie. I love acting and family dynamic was perfect. The last 15 minutes was scary as hell. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/09/24 Full Review nadia a 90% of the movie is watching people sleep on a camera while nothing happens. Slowest movie ever. Most boring movie ever. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/28/24 Full Review Dan R 'Paranormal Activity 3' directly links to the first two films in the franchise, but also serves as a prequel to the series as a whole. SYNOPSIS: 'In 1988, young sisters Katie and Kristi befriend an invisible entity called Toby, who resides in their home.' This film varies wildly in quality from slow and boring sections to some of the best practical effects seen across the entire franchise (so far). And because of this the film carries exactly the right amount of scares and horror. It sustains the horror of which we've seen in the first two films whilst building on the mythology of the demon 'Toby'. Unfortunately though I do have a complaint. As great as the ending is it leaves open so many plot holes and creates so many questions. How do we move from this film's conclusion to 'Paranormal Activity'? It's not explained and we'd need another film to get these answers. But based on the synopses of the rest of the franchise those answers aren't coming. For me that's really disappointing. The inter connectivity of the story is what has me hooked. A taut horror ride into a fantastic franchise. 7/10 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/12/24 Full Review Alec B Feels like they embraced the potential of the franchise here while still keeping it relatively simple. Most importantly it has some really effectively scary sequences. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/28/24 Full Review Read all reviews
