One of the greatest debut films for a director in tamil cinema history, and one of the best films in the last decade, Pariyerum Perumal is a brilliant and heartbreaking look at the life of a college going student, who ends up being treated horribly due to the outdated ideology of caste. As he tries to make a name for himself, he is constantly tormented due to the person he loves, the caste that he is from, and the fact that he stands up for himself to his tormenters. A brilliant film by Mari Selvaraj, the movie exposes many subjects that are never talked about head on in tamil cinema. Caste has always been something talked about, but not to the extent that this film does. Kathir, who plays the titular character gives a career best performance as the young man who is constantly harassed. You can't help but feel sad as he goes through the multiple hurdles and tribulations that he faces throughout the story. The music done by Santhosh Narayanan is excellent, highlighting the anger and sorrow of the story. Selvaraj does an amazing job of using symbolism to talk about this subject, and does so by using a dog to such an excellent degree. One of the most impactful tamil films I've seen, and one that you will watch and end up discussing, for years to come.
