Critics Consensus

George C. Scott's sympathetic, unflinching portrayal of the titular general in this sprawling epic is as definitive as any performance in the history of American biopics.

Pauline Kael The New Yorker It could, of course, be a very smart liberal ploy to make Patton a monster-man among mice, but it backfires by turning him into a hero. Isa B The opening scene of this film is captivating. That big, bright American flag, and George C. Scott playing one of the finest performances in his illustrious career. He deserved the Oscar that he won for his efforts in Patton. This movie is the product of a well-written screenplay, written by none other than Francis Ford Coppola, which also won him his first Oscar. Though Coppola was the main writer, the film had a co-writer, Edmund H. North. This historical war epic masterpiece is about one of history's greatest generals, and it was truly ahead of its time. The war sequences with all of the explosions are extraordinary. General George S. Patton was a man who lived to command soldiers on the battlefield. This film did justice to that great man. After a single viewing, Patton immediately became one of my favorite films. The 2 hour, 50 minute run seemed to fly by. I love the realism in the picture, not only with the gruesome wounds and dead soldiers, but with the authenticity in the languages. The Germans speak German, the French speak French, the Russians speak Russian and so on. That authenticity matters in a serious film about a true-life hero. The entire cast is amazing. Karl Malden is an actor that I always notice in movies, whether he's playing a general or a priest, it makes no difference. He has an awesome screen presence and was a very talented actor. James Edwards is always a pleasure to see on the screen and this picture is no exception. His screen time is rather limited, but he makes the most of it. Patton practically swept the Oscars, winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Film Editing and Best Sound. It deserved every one of them and perhaps should have won a couple more. Best Cinematography and Best Special Effects certainly wouldn't have been out of the question. Patton is an all-time great motion picture and one that I highly recommend. 98/100 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/21/25 Full Review rex w My favorite film of all time. I'm connected more with George C Scott's portrayal of Patton than with any other character in the movies. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/22/25 Full Review Christian K A dedicated lead performance and a impressive, large production makes this more than watchable, even if the redundant war plotting loses intrigue over time. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/28/25 Full Review Patrick F This film sets the standard for a good biopic. It takes a larger than life historical figure and focuses on the most consequential time in his life. Films that span a figures whole life feel rushed and a mile long, but an inch deep. Patton focuses only on the Five Star Generals most important ups and downs of the Second World War. Even for a movie that's almost three hours long it feels like it's an inch long, but a mile deep. A good examination of the Generals heroics and flaws. Some parts don't hold up, like the battle scenes pale in comparison to today's film. But the movie is a classic for a reason. George C. Scott gives an amazing for all time performance. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/13/24 Full Review Aender S The performance by George C. Scott makes this film excellent. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review Grant H A thrilling yet disturbing film that mythologizes Patton and the "noble sacrifice" of war. Scott inhabits his character so well that viewing footage of the real Patton becomes a let-down as reality is no match for the super-general Scott created. A unique viewing experience, and one you'll long remember. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/10/24 Full Review Read all reviews
