A thrilling yet disturbing film that mythologizes Patton and the "noble sacrifice" of war. Scott inhabits his character so well that viewing footage of the real Patton becomes a let-down as reality is no match for the super-general Scott created. A unique viewing experience, and one you'll long remember.

The film is mostly remembered for Scott's outstanding performance, and while I understand that, it would be unfair to not recognize the brilliant screenplay and Schaffner's direction as well. The film never loses focus and justifies it's extensive running time by seriously examining Patton's character and his actions during the war.

If anybody on God's green earth could accurately portray one of America's greatest generals of all time, George S. Patton, it's George C. Scott. Very few 20th century American made movies these days display the home-grown spirit of the proud United States military like this one does.
