      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Pet Sematary takes its source material in a few different directions, but this remake feels like an exhuming almost as often as it does a revival.

Audience Member For 2019: it's been 30 years since the original film terrified audiences and critics for the most part they were pretty split about the adaptation Me personally I thought it was very scary dealing with bringing the dead back to life and its reprecussions but it moved at a snail's pace and the acting was not so good I admit the child actor was so freaky Now this remake based on the book by Stephen King is almost the same but the filmmakers have added newer changes to it John Lithgow and Jason Clarke are both very good in it dealing with the concept of death and the afterlife in their own manner Heck there's even debate this time around if anything truly exists after we die or not Its setting is eerie, the makeup effects are creepy, and it moves faster this time around Although there are a few gaping plotholes and dumb decisions made by some people that could've been handled better Plus more of the lore could ve been explored too still, even if falls short in a few spots it's still an improved remake Sometimes dead is better and its wiser to not mess with the nature of things or crossing any lines It's also less silly creating drama with the family members The story changes its mood from happy-go-lucky to tragic to downright terrifying It also doesn't let up on the atmosphere right from the start The ending was much scarier too Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/06/24 Full Review Luna P Watchable but not good by any means. Nuff said. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/04/24 Full Review Dave W what a sorry waste of time money resources everything! people these days cant even come up with original ideas. and they use stupid cgi and modern production techniques because they barely have a shred of creativity: so whats the point here? redo a movie that was perfect in 1989? pathetic and embarrassing to fathom how sorry its gotten (movie music etc) i hope they lost millions! they deserve losing every single cent! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/02/24 Full Review Alec B A noble effort of sorts. Unlike the 1989 version there was more of an attempt to actually adapt the novel into a workable feature. As to the big departures from King's original work they aren't a problem per say but I wish the movie wasn't so smug about the constant misdirection and changes to the source material Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/27/24 Full Review Chadd J This was an all right movie. It was very creepy and it had almost no jump scares. The child actors nailed their parts. However, there were several loose ends that the movie never truly tied up. The plot become about the daughter and so many questions were left unanswered. I personally felt like it should have been longer and explained more things, but the actual horror element was done very well. Atavia Reed Chicago Reader This newest adaptation proves that, when written and directed with care, there's still life in the world of horror created by Stephen King. Feb 20, 2020 Full Review Peter Rainer FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's just a little too pulpy for the potential power of the story. Sep 27, 2019 Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Scroll.in While there is an artificiality about the scenes in the woods, the performances, editing and sound design keep the fear factor simmering. Jun 5, 2019 Full Review Stephanie Archer Film Inquiry Pet Sematary feels like a good time horror film wrapped in the Stephen King charm, but its terrors run deep and its implications devastating. Nov 18, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies It's one that will leave you constantly questioning its logic and always aware of its unfulfilled potential. Rated: 2/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review At 101 minutes, Pet Sematary feels like it's in a rush to get to the gore, whereas the real horror of this story lies in the justifications that lead a rational man to go against everything he believes.
