Critics Consensus

Pet Sematary takes its source material in a few different directions, but this remake feels like an exhuming almost as often as it does a revival.

Atavia Reed Chicago Reader This newest adaptation proves that, when written and directed with care, there's still life in the world of horror created by Stephen King. Lanal L Pet Sematary (2019): Finely filmed, directed, and written remake of the original 1989 movie. As for the actors? No one is better at creating a character than Jon Lithgow. I really liked him in the role of Jud Crandall; I actually liked him more than the excellent actor, Ed Gwynn. I would have cast Andrew Lincoln or Matthew McConaughey in the role of Louis Creed; Jason Clarke is too bland for the role and has no charisma as an actor. Amy Seimetz was convincing as Rachel Creed, as was Jeté Laurence as Ellie Creed. The film moves at a good clip and doesn’t drag as much as the first movie. There are some major differences between the two films: In the first film, Rachel Creed leaves to visit her mother, leaving her husband alone. This is when Church is hit and Louis buries the cat in the Sematary. In the 2019 version, the family is together, and the cat is more vicious and disruptive when it returns. The death scene of the little girl is an awful one but having her come back is even more terrifying (in the second film it’s the daughter rather than the son, Gage who dies and is buried in the Sematary). These changes were improvements—albeit gruesome ones—over the first film. The upshot? Derry is the creepiest, most frightening town on Earth, and I should know, I was born and raised in Maine. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/08/25 Full Review Korra N Better than the first adaptation but still not a great movie, this updated version is essentially a remix of that adaptation, still failing to capture the horror of the Wendigo & its everlasting hold on the land. Still, the acting, effects & cinematography are pretty damn good. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/02/25 Full Review Rundyl B Despite the significant differences from the book, it's not as bad as it might seem. The story itself is well-preserved, and the atmosphere of the king of horror is palpable. A few scenes are quite comical, but they don't break the immersion enough to make me feel disgusted. As an adaptation, I give it a 2/5, and as a standalone story or version, I give it a 3/5. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/20/25 Full Review Piotr B Despite my fears, the film is good. Despite the changes to the original, the overall story twist and atmosphere were preserved. The film is complemented by the cinematography and shots. The final confrontation changes from an atmospheric horror into a typical slasher film. The last scene, although not bad, seems a bit predictable (and stupider than in the original). It is a quite successful horror film for those who do not expect liters of blood and jump scares every moment. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/17/25 Full Review Rachael D I liked this movie to a certain point but I think I expected more from this Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/13/25 Full Review Stephen C Success in 1 hour and 41 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
