Critics Consensus

Pet Sematary takes its source material in a few different directions, but this remake feels like an exhuming almost as often as it does a revival.

Atavia Reed Chicago Reader This newest adaptation proves that, when written and directed with care, there's still life in the world of horror created by Stephen King. Feb 20, 2020 Full Review Peter Rainer FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's just a little too pulpy for the potential power of the story. Sep 27, 2019 Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Scroll.in While there is an artificiality about the scenes in the woods, the performances, editing and sound design keep the fear factor simmering. Jun 5, 2019 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews Casts a somber mood and leaves no room for humor or fun to creep in. Jul 14, 2024 Full Review Stephanie Archer Film Inquiry Pet Sematary feels like a good time horror film wrapped in the Stephen King charm, but its terrors run deep and its implications devastating. Blu B It's a better than average remake. I'll give it that. Aside from the ending there isn't too much different from the original one. Where there are differences is this does some things better than the other does and some things it doesn't do. The direction overall isn't bad here but the original had better lighting and the semetary when it was shown was a bit more memorable. The child acting is pretty good here overall but the boy in the original still takes the cake. The father in this one is a bit better but still on the stock side. John L. is solid and probably the best thing in this and at least on par with the original. Also, the pacing here is pretty solid and probably the biggest improvement over the first a bit. It just feels like it stays a bit more focused and while still moves at a lesiurely pace isn't as slow as the first. Overall everything else is half decent. There is also hardly any jump scares and it relies like the first on the idea creeping you out more than anything. I give it credit for that too. Now that being said, this still has lots of the problems the first has. The Mom's sister and the flashbacks in genreal don't really add much. The Pet Semetary itself is so dark you can barely see it. Arguably the biggest letdown is the night scenes in general outside. They are so freakin dark you can't see anything half the time. The special effects are a bit better too and don't look as cheap as the original did at times. The cult thing was barely in it and I wish maybe we would've explored that a bit more than meandering on the boring family and exploring more character development than the cat dying again. It pretty much treads the same 90% beats of the original. However, the ending is where the changes are and...I didn't mind it but idk it just didn't ramp up as well as the first did and I don't really get what changing that really did besides try to copy the vibe of Hereditary from a year earlier. On it's own this would probably be a good film but as a remake I have to ask why was this made and what value did this add besides making marginal improvements on certain things? Ironically enough by fixing the pacing and making it a bit better, it blunts the last 15-20 minutes power a bit as a tradeoff which I thought was interesting. In the shadow of the original this isn't half bad and honestly a good horror film on it's own. But I still would ironically say the 89' one with it's camp is still better but not by that much. If your a big fan of the franchise it's worht checking this out or if your a fan of any actors in this. It's honestly better than I thought it would be. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/08/24 Full Review Teddy B There was nothing more to really say in this reboot that the original film didn't already cover. I feel like an adaptation of a Stephen King book is acceptable enough when the screenplay is written by Stephen King. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/07/24 Full Review Emma K Great redo of classic ! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review Michael P The only good thing about this remake is the endings. It is a little tone dead for my taste. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/05/24 Full Review Audience Member Very unique and definitely creepy. Taking off 1 star because the animal animation was so silly Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/31/24 Full Review Olson K Watched on July 20, 2024. Was entertained... but it's not great, for sure.
