      Critics Consensus

Pitch Perfect's plot is formulaic, but the performances are excellent and the musical numbers are toe-tapping as well. Read critic reviews

College student Beca (Anna Kendrick) knows she does not want to be part of a clique, but that's exactly where she finds herself after arriving at her new school. Thrust in among mean gals, nice gals and just plain weird gals, Beca finds that the only thing they have in common is how well they sing together. She takes the women of the group out of their comfort zone of traditional arrangements and into a world of amazing harmonic combinations in a fight to the top of college music competitions.

It's not going to change the world, but Pitch Perfect is a perfectly charming and good hearted movie with a great sense of humor and some surprisingly great song sequences. As someone who does not give a single f*** about acapella, I was surprised how much I enjoyed the musical segments in this movie. The story is standard enough, and the girls are mostly stereotypes, but they work in their roles and there's enough depth when there needs to be. In fact they do spin the formula in some good ways where they can. I expected a standard villain from one of the girls, but was surprised to find depth in her when they actually just sat down and talked about their feelings. That's not how movies work! And it's surprisingly refreshing to see that sort of thing. The film is, unfortunately, dated in some weird ways though. Not just in the light misogyny or gay stereotyping, that's almost forgivable considering its time. What's a little harder is the jarring gross-out humor. This was the Bridesmaids era of girl comedies, when they had to prove girls could not just be funny, but gross too. And yeah, they can, but does it fit the tone of the movie? Not really. Overall though, it's a goofy and simple, but immensely charming flick.

The best thing Pitch Perfect has going for it is the music. It's excellent and catchy and performed incredibly well. While it may give you the inclination to get up and quote along to the many different pop songs it sprinkles throughout the film, the plot aspect lags behind. It will remind you instantly of the Bring It On franchise. It's a cliched and uninspired story featuring the outcast college freshman who ends up attracted to the outgoing good looking male counterpart who joins a crew of other misfits and blah blah blah. Anna Kendrick and company do just enough to give their characters some decent variation from the others, but sightly gags and stilted dialogue cut down the film when the musical numbers elevate it. It's entertaining and could be used a great drinking game for an outgoing group of kids, but past the excellent dance/musical numbers and a cast filled with stars and unknowns, Pitch Perfect will only satisfy when the volume's up.

A film impossible to hate. Hilarious and filled with great characters (with Rebel Wilson, Hana Mae Lee and Adam DeVine as standouts) and an interesting take on a familiar story. Thoroughly watchable from start to finish.

like a big screen version of Glee but not quite as good, it lacks the charm that the creators have with that show. Pitch Perfect has some of the funny moments, mainly due to the quirky supports and it delivers on the fun night in element. The film sadly doesn't hit all the right notes to become a bone fide cult film or classic, it just never goes for the biting satire or comedy moments. I liked the film and the segments with the commentary the most, but unfortunately it won't be hitting my top lists in years to come. Good for a night in and others might find more here. 19/05/2018.
