Kevin Maher Times (UK) A lack of originality is compensated for by charm and committed performances in this sweetly beguiling revamp of the Four Weddings formula. Rated: 4/5 Feb 10, 2020 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) Erskine, with her earthy chuckle and precision-tooled comic timing, is the real discovery here. She's a smutty, sniggering joy in the role and I can't wait to see what she does next. Rated: 4/5 Feb 9, 2020 Full Review Max Copeman Little White Lies A love story with its heart in the right place. Rated: 3/5 Feb 6, 2020 Full Review Noah Berlatsky Everything is Horrible (Substack) Plus One loves the spectacle of love, but it’s not clear it really loves Alice and Ben, or wants to take the time to get us to love them. Feb 16, 2024 Full Review Patricia Karounos Refinery29 I consider Plus One to be the most underrated rom-com of the last five years. Oct 23, 2023 Full Review Michael Cuby them. One of the best films I saw at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, Plus One is a delightfully charming summer romcom, the type that seems to be disappearing in theaters and thriving on streaming services. Helen C Wonderful Movie. Great Script, wonderful acting, and good story. Touching and good message. Loved it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/16/19 Full Review ina m I thought it was a light romantic comedy that was very entertaining. 👍🏼 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/15/19 Full Review HMF B Now that is the kind of rom-coms I like, slightly miserable and funny and with Maya Erskine's lemony quirkiness. Jack Quaid is also good. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/11/25 Full Review Éléonore A The friendship dynamics that leads to them getting involved is really spot on - but when it comes to their relationship, it feels like the writers dropped the ball as to what was making this duo click and work. Most of the actors are really good, the photography is nice. One of the problem of the movie is that it really lacks a woman's perspective when it comes to relationships, which makes for the usual problematic mix of a movie mainly targeted at female audiences blotted with male blind-spots everywhere. It's still more than watchable, even though the last act feels strained. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/25 Full Review Jonathan K This movie’s pretty cute and funny, especially thanks to Maya Erskine. She’s great. The story's a bit reductionist in how it paints commitment issues as if they aren't the collection of many parts of self, but are simply "my parents got divorced so I'm afraid of getting divorced too." Sure, that's part of it, but we humans are far more complex than that. But yeah, it's a comedy, so it doesn't have to be much more than it was and it still feels authentic enough that it doesn’t drag the whole thing down. And of course there's the classic “white guy screws up, has immature views on love, then crawls back to win the girl” trope, but hey, it’s a rom-com, tropes abound. I'm coming down harder on it in this review than reflects my enjoyment of it; it does what it’s supposed to do. Cute and funny. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/02/25 Full Review Lolana B I did not like either of the main characters, so didn't really care whether they got together or not. The male protagonist was okay, and it might have worked with him and a different partner, but I didn't detect any chemistry between these two people. The female protagonist was supposed to be fun and eccentric, but I just saw her as rude, embarrassing, and unlikeable. Even when they were just hanging out and bantering, I didn't find their conversations interesting or funny, so lost interest in this movie very quickly.
